Former St Kilda midfield coach Mick McGuane says St Kilda must play Luke Ball in the finals where the tough midfielder can apply his strength around the contested balls.

"Luke Ball, in a finals situation, will play in that team," McGuane said.

"I've got no doubt about it . . . providing he is healthy. You need players who can win their own footy."
