Richmond suspends Mykelti Lefau for their 2026 season opener against Carlton after the forward was caught drink-driving.

Victoria Police confirmed Lefau, 27, was pulled over in East Malvern in the early hours of the morning and allegedly blew .108 - more than double the legal blood alcohol limit.

"We are extremely disappointed with Mykelti's actions, and he is fully aware that his poor judgement put both himself and the community at risk," Richmond CEO Shane Dunne said.

Richmond will be without Mykelti Lefau for the remainder of the 2024 season after scans confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The promising key forward had left the ground during the final quarter of the Tigers' 30-point loss to Geelong after landing awkwardly in a marking contest.

"Football can be a cruel game sometimes, and for Mykelti, who has been in terrific form, this is an unfortunate way for his debut season to finish," Richmond footy performance manager Tim Livingstone said.

"Mykelti has not put a foot wrong since he joined our AFL program in the pre-season."

Mykelti Lefau makes his AFL debut for Richmond at the MCG with 5 disposals (a kick and 4 handballs), a mark and 2 tackles in a 30-point loss to Port Adelaide.

Richmond hand a rookie deal to former rugby league player Mykelti Lefau on the final day of the pre-season supplementary signing period (SSP).

"Mykelti has worked hard to put himself in this position, from learning the game as a teenager to coming back from a serious injury last year," Richmond National Recruiting Manager, Matt Clarke said.

"He has not put a foot wrong since he came to our Club and has shown across the past three months that he can blossom in a professional environment."
