Suns coach Damien Hardwick says Gold Coast key forward Jed Walter is earning his trust as the exciting key forward ponders his future and seizes the moment.

"We love the kid, our fans love the kid and we've always known what this guy can be ... he probably is playing at the vast majority of other sides," Hardwick said of Walters.

"But we've been relatively successful over this short period and it does take some time to earn your place in that side and trust is earned.

"And he's working his way through that, he's become better every year and we'd love him to stay."

Jed Walter says he has been focusing on improving his "game IQ" through studying and working on his mental approach to the sport in his second season.

"In my first year I was erratic, just trying to do everything at once, probably working too hard for the footy," Walter said.

"I'm just playing a bit smarter now with my leading patterns, (finding) where the space is and finding good positions."

Gold Coast will be without Jed Walter for the opening round of 2025 after the first-year forward was hit with a suspension in the VFL.

Walter, who was omitted from the Suns' senior side for their final game of the year, copped a two-game ban for striking Frankston's Sebastian Quirk in the third quarter of Saturday's VFL Wildcard Round match.
