Oisin Mullin Biography

Oisin Mullin used to tag in Gaelic Football, although he was much more than that for County Mayo when he became a two-time young player of the year winner in the GAA.

Right now, the Irishman has become one of the most effective taggers in the AFL, while becoming increasing damaging the other way with each passing week.

Before Mullin had even played a game in the AFL, Irish games record-holder Zach Tuohy told AFL.com.au just how significant his decision was to walk away from a burgeoning career at home to try a foreign game in a foreign land. That was the origin of the Daicos comparison.

"I'm not sure people realise how big a deal Oisin is in Ireland. He is just about the best young footballer in Ireland. If not the best, certainly one of the best. He was playing at a high level back home, so he has really good professional standards," Tuohy told said.

"It really would be like pulling Nick Daicos out of the AFL. He was young footballer of the year a couple of times, which is the highest honour you can win at that age. Nick Daicos is probably a really good example, to be honest."

Oisin Mullin will remain with Geelong until at least the end of 2025 after signing a new deal with the Cats.

The 23-year-old wasn't out of contract until the end of next season, but Geelong has rewarded him with a one-year extension following a bright start to life in the AFL.

Mullin made his debut against Greater Western Sydney in round 11 after playing just five games of football in his life – two practice matches in the pre-season and three VFL games – and finished his first season with six AFL games around eight VFL appearances.

Geelong veteran Zach Tuohy believes that fellow Irishman Oisin Mullin is set to have a big impact in the AFL.

"I'm not sure people realise how big a deal Oisin is in Ireland. He is just about the best young footballer in Ireland. If not the best, certainly one of the best. He was playing at a high level back home, so he has really good professional standards," Tuohy said.

"He is the most highly rated player in his type and position, which is running half-back. Any team in Ireland would have snapped your hand off if they could have gotten him. To make the move was a really big and brave decision as well, which tells you how serious he is to make it work. It is a big deal."

Oisin Mullin will join Geelong as a category B rookie ahead of 2023, more than a year after first signing for the club.

"We are thrilled he will now join the Cats for season 2023; he is a gifted talent, however, most importantly, a quality person who will be a great addition to our playing squad," Geelong list manager Andrew Mackie said.

"Oisin has had another impressive season with Mayo and we are looking forward to welcoming him and his partner Jess to the club and to Geelong."

Oisin Mullin backflips on a decision to sign for the Cats ahead of the 2022 season, opting to remain in his homeland and continue with Gaelic side Mayo.

"Going to Australia to play professionally was a really interesting opportunity and it was something I wanted to research and consider in detail," Mullin said.

"It was a big decision for me as playing for Mayo with my friends is a huge honour and something I love doing, so I wanted to take the time to consider all aspects of it. After some careful thinking and a lot of support from family, I have decided to stay in Ireland and I am really excited about joining up with the Mayo Senior Football panel as soon as possible."

Mullin has played in the All Ireland final in each of the past two years, and earned GAA All Star selection following his breakout 2020 season. He was also named the GAA Young Footballer of the Year in 2020 (the equivalent of the NAB AFL Rising Star), and has again been named a finalist for the award this year.
