Cathal McShane Biography

Thursday, 6 February 2020
Irish star Cathal McShane has chosen not to pursue an AFL career with Adelaide.

The 24-year-old spent 10 days with the Crows in January as he considered becoming the latest player to switch from Gaelic football to the AFL.

"It is a big decision to relocate to the other side of the world and pursue a professional career in a different sport," Adelaide list boss Justin Reid said.

"Ultimately, this was not something that Cathal was ready for and we wish him the very best in his endeavours both on and off the field.

"We will continue to look for opportunities to bring talent into our club."

Cathal McShane, one of Gaelic football's breakout stars from county Tyrone, is seriously contemplating a move to the AFL to join rebuilding Adelaide.

McShane caught AFL recruiters' attention with his transformation last season from a run-of-the-mill half-forward and midfielder into Tyrone's focal point and the competition's leading scorer.

He subsequently received All-Star honours and was a genuine contender for Player of the Year, with one scout suggesting he could play at centre half-forward in the AFL.

The 24-year-old will fly out to Australia in January to train with the Crows, who can still sign him as a Category B rookie and place him on their list for the 2020 season.
