Josh Kelly says he accepts his role in not always being the prime onballer for the Giants anymore as young guns in Tom Green and Finn Callaghan take the spotlight. "We've got some star midfielders coming through like Finn and Tom. I've had moments in the midfield supporting those guys and moments on the wing supporting other young guys," Kelly said. "So sometimes that is my role and sometimes my role is to watch those guys turn games on their own and honestly, it's been awesome to see Finn take that step this year."

On the eve of his 100th AFL game, Tom Green says he is focused on helping the Giants win their first premiership. "That might be diminishing a little bit of the story on being a Giants Academy product. I do feel really Giants through and through and if you could have told me when I was 16 that you'll play 100 AFL games, I would have said, 'That's incredible, I'm super stoked.' Now that I'm here and you've been close to that flag, you get a little taste of it and you go, 'No, I really want that, I need that.' That's what motivates me every single day," he said.

Tom Green loves returning to Canberra because of his childhood connection, the support from his family and friends, and the opportunities the Giants' academy provided him. "I moved around a lot as a kid due to dad's work and lived in a lot of areas that aren't AFL first and then to go to Canberra and have an obvious pathway to the AFL through the academy, I was really lucky to have and to take advantage of," Green said. "Now being in the AFL, when I go home, getting to see my family and see my mates, not only outside the game but at the game, they're cheering me on [and] I can see them when running out and back in, it's something I really treasure."

The AFL hands down bans and fines to several GWS players for their behaviour at an end-of-season function. After an AFL Integrity Unit investigation, the players were found to have breached AFL rule 2.3a, which involves conduct unbecoming. Young Giant Josh Fahey has been banned for four matches while Jake Riccardi, Joe Fonti, Toby McMullin, Harvey Thomas and Cooper Hamilton have all been banned for two games. Captain Toby Greene and other senior Giants players Sam Taylor, Tom Green, Lachie Keefe, Harry Perryman, Connor Idun and Lachie Whitfield have been fined $5000 each. Whitfield and Idun were fined for both their role in performing a skit and for a breach of leadership duties, while the other senior Giants were penalised for not intervening as leaders of the club. "There is nothing funny or clever about these actions and we are not as a code and competition prepared to accept these behaviours," AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said. "For the most part our clubs and our AFL players do the right thing and can come together to celebrate or commiserate without the type of behaviour demonstrated here. "What transpired at the function is not acceptable – not to the other men, women or anyone who is part of the club. Not for all the people in our industry and not for the wider public."

Tom Green has a breakout game against the Western Bulldogs with a 38 disposals and 3 goals. “Typically he's been a really strong stoppage player, but he's now finding the ball in transition … that's through work-rates, through positioning, and then tonight he's been able to finish his work,” Giants coach Adam Kingsley said of Green. “I can't wait to see him progress and develop over the next two, three, five years, my belief is he could be an elite midfielder of the competition if he's not there already."

Tom Green signs a four-year deal to stay at Greater Western Sydney until the end of 2027. Green says he relishes the additional responsibility created by the loss of former Giants players. "I'm always disappointed to see both good players and good people leave, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking at it and thinking of the opportunity it gives myself and the other midfielders," Green said. "I like and cherish that responsibility and look forward to it. I think if you rise to the occasion and you try harder and give everything you have, you will step up because your mates are relying on you."

Interim GWS coach Mark McVeigh says Tom Green has been dropped from the senior side due to a lack of form. "I think that's off the back of a big pre-season, young player, inside contested player, gets hit hard every week, can be tagged. He wins a lot of his own ball and we rely on him a lot in that area. Probably over the last month it's just started to get to him a bit so I've chosen to freshen him up," McVeigh said of Green. "He's disappointed obviously but we've got to be smart in the way we approach this. I want energy towards the end of the season."

The Giants face the sticky and complicated situation of going into the most significant Draft Value Index (DVI) deficit in the system's five years of existence, depending on where a bid is placed on their Academy prospect Tom Green. Rival clubs believe local foes Sydney – who holds pick No.5 in next week's draft – is the most likely team to call Green's name on Wednesday night, which would force GWS to find 1502 DVI points to match the bid. It could leave the Giants facing the daunting prospect of starting next year's player movement period without a single pick until the third or potentially even the fourth round of the 2020 national draft.
