John Noble prepares to face Collingwood for the first time since crossing to Gold Coast from the Magpies last off-season. "I'm just treating it like another game. Obviously, there's history there, but I'm not too focused on that at all. It's more just a really good challenge for us as a club," he said. Noble says his move to the Suns has been seamless. "It almost feels like getting drafted again ... you've got to earn the respect of everyone in the business," he said. "Building new relationships and finding your core friends and things like that takes the distraction away and you can move on freely. "I'm loving my footy, I'm loving living here and I love the club, they've been super welcoming for me and my family. It hasn't been too difficult at all."

David Noble's time as Roos coach ends following the team's 14th straight loss, with Noble managing just five wins in 38 games. "The numbers haven't been great. We wanted to be competitive around the group we were sitting with, we wanted to challenge the group above us and really try to challenge the top-four group and we haven't been able to do it," Noble said. "At the end of the day, the buck stops with me. I haven't been able to get the performances and that's me."

John Noble has become an integral member of the Magpies' defensive unit after being overlooked on draft night four times. Noble has raced to 56 games since being plucked out of the SANFL in the 2019 Mid-Season Rookie Draft, playing all but six games in that stretch. “The longer I’ve been around the club, when there is an opportunity to smell the flowers, I do. When the mid-season draft comes around each year it does take you back to where you’ve come from. Something I’ll never lose sight of is what I was doing and where I’ve come from,” Noble said. “It’s been a quick journey – it has gone really quick – but I’m very grateful for where I am. I think it’s still really important to have that gratitude and to smell the flowers and see how far you as an individual have actually come.”

John Noble recounts how he had a reunion of sorts with primary schoolmate Brayden Maynard, who also attended Our Lady of Grace in Glengowrie, South Australia. "It was funny, because we hadn't actually seen each other for such a long time. It was almost like a reunion after that long. We've spoken a few times about the good old days at OLOG and a couple of mates we both know and the people we still know. It's always a good laugh," Noble said.

John Noble signs a new two-year deal to remain at the Magpies until the end of 2021. The 22-year-old Noble was recruited from SANFL club West Adelaide via the Mid-Season Rookie Draft and played five matches, including the qualifying and preliminary finals. The son of Brisbane's head of football David, he averaged 19 disposals and four marks a match playing as a rebound defender. "John's story is unlike many others in the League, and we look forward to seeing it continue with the Pies," Collingwood list manager Ned Guy said. "To be able to come in and have an impact in some of the club's bigger games at the back end of the year is quite remarkable. He'll be even better prepared for 2020 with a pre-season under his belt and his experience in 2019."

In May, John Noble was running around Richmond Oval playing for West Adelaide in the SANFL. On Friday, finished with 19 disposals and seven tackles in just his fourth AFL game when the Magpies defeated the Cats in a qualifying final at the MCG. The Magpie fans consider him to be their lucky charm as he is yet to taste defeat at the top level. "It's pretty surreal, I'm sure it won't sink in for a few days, just really happy to get this win with the boys, they're a special group," Noble said. "It's not just getting drafted, it's amazing being at a club like Collingwood. They have a 'head down, bum up' mentality, if you get a game you get a game. "I wouldn't have thought I would be playing in a (winning) qualifying final to play in a prelim, so every game is a bonus."

Mid-season draftee John Noble to make a fairytale rise to AFL football after just three VFL games when he debuts for Collingwood this week. "We're reflecting on a whirlwind couple of months, doing pre-season with a club in South Australia and now finishing up in another state playing your first game of AFL footy to fulfil a dream is something that we're very happy to provide, but (it's) well earned," Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said about Noble. "He's got a lot of dash, he takes the game on, he uses the ball really well, he's courageous with his decisions, he's very forthright in the way that he goes about the game, but he's actually been defending very well, he's always in the right spot and competing and contesting really well."
