Tony Modra posts a heartfelt message and photo to Instagram as he continues his recovery from his near-fatal crash.

Tony Modra releases a statement after returning home from intensive cair since being involved in a serious accident.

"I have left hospital to continue my recovery at home and only now starting to wrap my head around the incredible amount of support and well wishes that have come our way," Modra said in the statement.

"I remain deeply grateful to the members of the public who gave me vital first aid until professional help arrived, to others who offered reassurance, and to the emergency responders, medical staff and specialists who have cared for me since the accident.

"My progress has been encouraging and we kindly ask that our privacy continues to be respected as we focus on my rehabilitation. Thank you."

Tony Modra is released from intensive care after undergoing surgery on his jaw, cheekbone, and eye socket.

"He's got no brain issues, a little bit tough emotionally to get through reliving what happened," former Crows captain and good friend Ricciuto said.

"Yesterday, he actually came out of intensive care, which is great, but he's got to go back in and have more surgery today.

"It's a miracle not only that he's alive, but that he's at the point where he is right now."

Tony Modra is awake after facial surgery and remains in a serious, but stable, condition in hospital.

Modra suffered facial injuries when a fallen tree branch smashed through the windshield of the truck he was driving.

Tony Modra is recovering after he being seriously injured in a truck accident on his cattle property in South Australia.

"He's going OK, and we're fingers crossed he's gonna get through it OK at the moment. It wasn't a good place to be by the sounds of it, and they got through it and ... he's in a reasonable position at this stage," former Adelaide teammate and friend Mark Ricciuto said.

Modra was taken to hospital in a critical condition with head injuries after a truck he was driving struck a tree.

"It was extremely windy as everyone knows yesterday, and, a complete freak accident, a tree got uprooted and fell across the road right in front of him as he was driving on the correct side of the road and hit his windscreen," Ricciuto said.

"Just an absolute freak accident. He didn't veer off [the road], didn't even get time to try and avoid it. He was doing the right thing and [the tree] hit the windscreen and that's how it happened."

The young forward has been compared to former Crow great Tony Modra.

"I don't think you can compare me and Tony Modra. He's kicked more than 500 goals. I've played 10 games and kicked 20 goals, so I don't think there's any comparison there," he said.
