Xavier O'Halloran makes his AFL debut for GWS with 9 disposals (5 kicks and 4 handballs) and 3 tackles in a 4-point win over Essendon.

GWS pair Xavier O'Halloran and Zac Sproule will miss at least the next month of footy after being injured in a NEAFL practice match.

O'Halloran could be sidelined for a month with a syndesmosis strain in his ankle, while Sproule copped a grade two medial collateral ligament strain and is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks.

Greater Western Sydney draftee Xavier O'Halloran will continue a proud family tradition when he pulls on the No.33 jumper his grandfather, Ron McCarthy, wore for Footscray in the 1950s.

McCarthy passed away in 1989, so never got to meet his grandson, but O'Halloran clearly knows plenty about his grandfather's footy career after wearing the No.33 for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup.

GWS select Xavier O'Halloran with pick No.22 in the 2018 National Draft.

“Xavier was a target for us because of his combination of speed and endurance as a midfielder but his leadership adds another element," GWS recruiting manager Adrian Caruso said.

“He rocks up every week and has shown flexibility in playing forward as well as in the midfield.”
