Essendon midfielder Jye Caldwell will miss at least two games due to a hamstring injury sustained during training.

Jye Caldwell is facing surgery on a significant hamstring injury which could sideline him for the remainder of the 2021 season. The 20-year-old has managed just two games for the Bombers since crossing from GWS in the off-season.

Jye Caldwell explains his decision to move from the Giants to Essendon at the end of 2020, having made up his mind after speaking with Bombers coach Ben "Truck" Rutten.

"I felt like it was an opportunity that I should take and if I gave it up I thought I'd kick myself," Caldwell said.

"Nothing against the Giants, it was a good football club and I really enjoyed my last couple of years there, but moving forward I reckon for my football Essendon was the place to be.

"It was probably more about the history of the club. Truck spends a lot of time teaching us new boys about its history and how big it really is, but also on field we have a tight group in the midfield that we've all been working on and we all complement each other in there."

The Giants trade Jye Caldwell to Essendon. Essendon sent pick No.29 and its future second-round selection to GWS in exchange for Caldwell, pick No.44 and No.74.

GWS list manager Jason McCartney says the club expects a first-round pick in return for Jye Caldwell.

The out-of-contract 20-year-old has indicated his desire to move to the Bombers on a minimum four-year deal worth about $450,000 per season on average.

"We've invested an enormous amount of time in Jye, and Jye's done really well in conjunction with our medical team. He had some injury issues (hamstrings) when we brought him in, but we took that on board and he's on top of all that. He's ready to play, he's cherry ripe and ready to explode," McCartney said.

Jye Caldwell requests a trade from Greater Western Sydney, nominating Essendon as his preferred home.

"Jye has informed us that he would like to return home to Victoria," Giants football boss Jason McCartney said in a statement.

"We had tabled a very competitive offer for a second-year player but we'll now work to facilitate a trade that will provide a strong result for our football club."

GWS co-captain sings the praises of draftee Jye Caldwell.

"If I was going to put a 10-year contract in front of anyone, I'd put it in front of Jye Caldwell. I just love Jye," Davis said.

"He's tough and he kicked this goal against Sydney the other day off two steps on the run and I was like 'That's special'. Every now and again you get glimpses. I think Jye is something really special."

GWS select Jye Caldwell with pick No.11 in the 2018 National Draft.

“He’s a super competitor and has the athleticism most midfielders don’t have. He kicks with both feet and has really good vision with his hands.”
