North Melbourne players and officials will wear black armbands in their clash with Brisbane in honour of former player Red Og Murphy who suddenly and tragically passed away in Ireland.

"Our thoughts are with those closest to Red Og, his family and friends in his home in Ireland, and all those who played and worked alongside him and became friends with him during his time at North Melbourne," North Melbourne CEO Ben Amarfio said.

Irish Kangaroo Red Og Murphy quits the club halfway through his two-year contract to return home.

Murphy kicked a season-high two goals for North Melbourne's VFL side last weekend, but AFL.com.au understands he struggled with homesickness throughout this year.

His parents visited him in Australia recently and he has since decided not to play on next season.

North confirms the signing of Irish teenager Red Óg Murphy who will join the club on a two-year deal as a Category B rookie.

"Red was invited to Arden Street and we were really happy with his ability and character," North football boss Cameron Joyce said.

"We feel that he has the right foundations to enable him to have a real crack at playing in the AFL and we will give him every chance."
