A positional switch is set to revitalise Charlie Constable's career at AFL level, with Gold Coast seriously considering the former Geelong midfielder as a starting half-back for round one.

"What we do know is he's a great ball-user," Suns defensive coach Tate Kaesler said.

"His composure with ball and the way he can slice opposition teams apart is something I value, but what he's been working on big time is his defensive craft.

"We've exposed him to being that third tall as well, so he can play in different layers in that defensive part of the game."

Gold Coast select Charlie Constable with pick No.63 in the 2021 National Draft.

Draft Report: Ready-made midfielder was delisted by the Cats despite racking up huge disposal numbers in the VFL. Played 12 games over three seasons at the Cattery.

Geelong delists Charlie Constable, who played the first three matches of 2021, but failed to break back into the side again.

"We have had open dialogue with Charlie over the past two years in regards to him looking for greater opportunity at another club," Geelong's general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.

"We believe Charlie is a good player, but we have a number of players that play a similar role. We are hoping that allowing Charlie to become a free agent may help him find a new club."

Charlie Constable is the round 2 AFL Rising Star nominee after tallying 31 disposals, 7 clearances and kicking a goal in Geelong's 80-point rout of Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium.

Geelong midfield coach Matthew Knights credits Constable's hard work during the pre-season for his improvement thus far in 2019.

"There were times during running sessions where he pushed himself to exhaustion, and he'll only get better at that," Knights said.

"Charlie's proud of the way he has started, and we're very proud of him too, but he's also quick to defer to the team. That's just him. There's not much fuss about Charlie."

Constable can also call on an illustrious member of his own family for advice. His mother is a niece of three-time premiership coach Mick Malthouse, who has imparted some words of wisdom at various times.

"He told me to just enjoy all the moments along the way because your career is over very quickly. That really resonates with me, because there have been a couple of special moments already," Constable said.

Friday, 22 March 2019
Charlie Constable makes his AFL debut for Geelong at the MCG with 21 disposals (9 kicks and 12 handballs), 4 marks, 3 tackles and a goal in a 7-point win over Collingwood.
Wednesday, 5 December 2018
Big-bodied youngster Charlie Constable has impressed in his first four weeks back at pre-season training.

"His ability to win the ball and distribute to his teammates with a beautiful handball is a skill that I think is underrated in the modern game," Cats assistant coach Matthew Knights said.

"I think that's one of Charlie's big parts of his game and also his kicking is very precise. Ninety per cent of the time if he's got the ball, he's going to find a target with his kicking.

"He's still got to work for it and show that he's capable at AFL level but he's showing good signs at the moment."
