Tim Smith has decided to hang up the boots after three years largely ruined by injury.

The 28-year-old was drafted by the Demons from Casey in the 2017 NAB AFL Rookie Draft as a mature-age recruit, playing 13 AFL games up forward and as an undersized ruckman across his three seasons.

Smith was unable to string together more than three consecutive matches in that time at either AFL or VFL level, finishing his career with a foot injury.

"I'll get to spend a lot more time with my daughter and my soon-to-be wife and really enjoy that aspect of my life. I'm not getting any younger, and I don't feel like my body can get what I want to get out of it," Smith said.

"I don't think my body can handle that demand anymore and I just felt like it was the right decision for myself, and it allows someone else to come in and have the opportunity like I've had."

Tim Smith signs a new deal with Melbourne that will keep him at the club until the end of 2018.

"After working hard to get his opportunity at AFL level, Tim has had an injury-interrupted season. We feel that Tim deserves another opportunity to show what he can do," Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"He has been rewarded with another one-year extension to his rookie contract. This gives Tim the assurance that he'll be on our list next year and he can focus his attention on rehabilitating his current foot injury and prepare himself for a strong season, leading into 2018."

Tim Smith will make his debut against Geelong at Etihad Stadium this week after being upgraded from the rookie list.

"To get told that you're going to play your first game is something surreal and something that you dreamed about hearing for your whole football life," Smith said.

"I can't believe the time's come. I froze … that was the moment that it's just changed everything for me, so I can’t wait to get out there this week and show what I've got."
