Daniel Venables Biography

Wednesday, 4 August 2021
Daniel Venables is forced into premature retirement after an AFL medical panel unanimously recommended that he avoid contact sport, including Australian football.

The 22-year-old, who was the youngest member of the 2018 premiership team, has not played since suffering a brain trauma injury in a marking contest in round nine, 2019 against Melbourne at Optus Stadium.

"I'm sad, but I guess I'm relieved because the pressure's off and now I can focus on my rehab. I'm not able to play again, so I can just concentrate on my health," he said.

"It's not until you sit back and reflect on the time that you understand how far you've come and the things you have had to go through. I feel like this has matured me as a person and it will help me in the future."

Venables has been sidelined since mid-2019 after a collision with Melbourne's Tim Smith that resulted in significant brain trauma and ongoing concussion issues.

"We remain committed to helping Dan strive to play senior football at our club again," Eagles list manager Darren Glass said.

"We will continue to explore with the AFL the options available to us to facilitate Dan's return to senior football with us as soon as he is medically cleared to do so."

Daniel Venables will sit out the 2020 season as he continues to deal with lingering symptoms from a head knock suffered in round nine of 2019.

"We've worked very hard with Dan to try and get him best prep and see where he's at physically, (but) it just hasn't pulled up well enough and he's going to take the rest of the year off," coach Adam Simpson said.

"It gets to a certain point where he can't go to that next level and I think the best thing for him and his health would be to pull it back."

"It’s been a bit of an up-and-down season personally, but I’m just happy to be in the side for the moment and looking forward to it."

"We’re moving to the new stadium and to the new facilities at Lathlain Park, so I can’t really ask for anything more."
