Brisbane hung Jarrod Berry's No. 7 guernsey next to the door in the rooms and put a photo of the injured midfielder on the board in the meeting room, using his absence to inspire the Lions to back-to-back premierships at the MCG on Saturday. Berry knew he was a long shot of playing in a third straight Grand Final after dislocating his shoulder in last Saturday's preliminary final win over Collingwood, but wasn't ruled out until Thursday morning. "Bez has been so important for our brotherhood, he is one of the players who is the glue of this group and he has been from the start. Just like 'Big O' last year it was devastating for him. He is a great team man and he held his head up high," teammate Hugh McCluggage said of Berry.

"It was nice to see the club put their faith in me, and I’ll be here for a little bit longer. "The people, the friendships, and bonds I've formed over the eight years I have been here and the people outside of the club that support me has been tremendous."

His arrival at the Lions coincided with the appointment of coach Chris Fagan and football manager David Noble, a pair he credits immensely with being made to feel welcome. "The role of Chris and David in that aspect has been pretty large in my career. They've been great for me. They've shown me the right way to do stuff. That was the main reason for re-signing," Berry said. "I believe in what they're bringing to the table, what they've taught the coaches and what they're messaging is to us players."

Steven May has failed in his bid to play in round one after unsuccessfully challenging his one-match ban for engaging in rough conduct against Brisbane midfielder Jarrod Berry. "I don't need to change my whole game but there are parts I can clean up, no doubt," May said. "I don't want to be here (Tribunal) ever again. Like I said, we play a fast-paced game and those decisions are made on instinct."

He's really quick and he'll complement our forward and midfield group."

Jarrod Berry says he'll be fit for the start of the season despite dealing with a foot injury that currently has him in a moon boot. Berry had an outstanding debut season in 2017, playing 16 games, but missed the final month with what the club called a "minor" foot problem. "It's not a long-term thing and the club is just taking cautionary measures to make sure it's right for the start of the season," Berry said. "I'm just keeping off it and having a bit of rest and letting it settle. "Around Christmas I'll know a bit more in-depth where I sit and how long it's going to take for me to come back."

It followed excellent athletic results for the 18-year-old across the combine, including being a joint winner of the beep test by reaching level 15.1. The attacking half-back/midfielder also finished in the top 10 for the repeat sprints, clean hands and kicking tests, reminding recruiters of his athleticism.
