Mitch Hibberd set to miss up to six weeks of pre-season running after undergoing knee surgery.

Hibberd injured his knee in a training mishap last week. While he was cleared of structural damage, he was sent for surgery to repair meniscus damage.

North Melbourne will not offer Mitch Hibberd a contract beyond 2018.

Mitch Hibberd will require surgery for an injured shoulder that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

"Mitch was involved in a marking contest in the first quarter and extended his arm over his head in an attempt to spoil the ball," North doctor Peter Baquie said.

"His arm was awkwardly sandwiched between two players. Upon assessing his shoulder on the bench, we immediately ruled him out of action for the remainder of the game and knew the outcome after scans would be unfavourable."

Mitchell Hibberd makes his AFL debut for North Melbourne at Docklands Stadium with 10 disposals (3 kicks and 7 handballs), 2 marks and a tackle in a 43-point loss to West Coast.

Mitch Hibberd is sent for scans after suffering a serious right knee injury in the VFL on the same knee he had reconstructed in 2013.

The 19-year-old went to turn and chase a loose ball near the wing when his foot planted in the turf, forcing the yet-to-debut Kangaroo to fall to ground clutching the knee.

Hibberd looked in obvious pain as trainers took him off the ground on a stretcher, after the innocuous incident happened in the second quarter of VFL affiliate Werribee's seven-point loss to Port Melbourne.

Mitchell Hibberd says he is keen to get a taste of senior footy in 2016.

"To get an opportunity in the NAB Challenge was great. It gives you a little taste and it leaves you wanting more," Hibberd said.

"To play a game – if not a couple – this year would be huge.

"That's my goal this year. That and just building my body up to get ready for the rigours of AFL."

North Melbourne select Mitchell Hibberd with pick No.33 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

"Hibberd was coming off some injuries but he's shown that he's an exceptional aerobic athlete. He can play wing or in that seventh defender role and is noted for his marking," North Melbourne recruiting manager Bryce Lewis said.
