Lewis Melican will undergo surgery for damaged hamstring tendon and is expected to miss two months.

Lewis Melican re-injures his hamstring, a blow for the young defender who has not played a game since first straining his hamstring against Greater Western Sydney at the SCG in round three.

"He has done it twice on each side now which is not great," Swans coach John Longmire said.

"That is disappointing for both him and for us because we rate the kid as a player."

Lewis Melican is expected to miss two weeks after injuring his hamstring in the Swans' win over Greater Western Sydney at the SCG.

Lewis Melican earns the round 18 NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after keeping St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt to 10 disposals and one goal.

"He’s taken on some big challenges and played on some of the competition’s best forwards, and we’ve got confidence in him that he can do that," Sydney coach John Longmire said of Melican.

"He’s a terrific country boy who is a fairly quiet, respectful kid and he’s getting more confident every week with the more football he plays."

Lewis Melican signs a new three-year contract extension with Sydney that will keep him at the club until the end of 2020.

"Lewis has been on a gradual improvement curve since arriving at the Swans as a rookie three years ago," Swans head of football Tom Harley said.

"After overcoming a few injuries, he was able to put together a really solid pre-season and force his way into the senior team.

"His poise with the ball, competitive nature and overall character hold him in good stead and we are very happy that he has committed to us for the next three seasons."

Lewis Melican makes his AFL debut for Sydney at the SCG with 13 disposals (9 kicks and 4 handballs), 8 marks and a tackle in a 42-point loss to GWS.

Sydney select Lewis Melican with pick No.52 in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"He's a terrific prospect. He's young in the draft age but is really task-focused and is a good size at 193cm and a key defender," Sydney football manager Tom Harley said.

"We really liked the way Lewis progressed this year and he's got a lot of upside going forward."
