Ethan Hughes Biography

Defender Ethan Hughes hopes to cement his spot in the 2023 Dockers side by expanding his versatility to being able to play on the wing.

"I've probably done 95 per cent of the pre-season on the wing, so it's nice to put that body of work together," he said.

"Going forward I see myself on the wing and rolling back when I need to."

Ethan Hughes, Michael Apeness and Ryan Nyhuis are delisted by Fremantle but will be re-drafted as rookies.

"At the start of the Trade Period, Fremantle held just one pick in the opening four rounds but we now hold a pick in the first four rounds, where we plan to utilise the picks to secure new, young players," Fremantle general manager of football Peter Bell said.

"As a result, we have had to make some list changes to make room for the players we are looking to bring in through the draft."

Ethan Hughes signs a one-year contract extension to remain at Fremantle in 2019.

Hughes fell out of favour in 2018 after all-but nailing down a best-22 berth by playing in 18 of the final 19 matches in 2017.

Hughes only made five senior appearances in 2018 and was named an emergency nine times.

Wednesday, 3 December 2014
Fremantle select Ethan Hughes with pick No.13 in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"He's really well balanced and really smart with the way he goes about his footy. He's sort of caught our eye throughout the year as he improved," Fremantle list manager Brad Lloyd said.

"He's got a fair bit of scope from a development point of view as he worked through getting into a professional program at Peel and Swans and now coming in at an AFL level we think there's some real scope, using his clean hands and he's got a strong running ability and he's got good evasiveness and awareness and good agility."
