"We were in our last training session before he was due to return to play," high performance manager Justin Crow said.

"He was punching a ball and felt his quad again. There is really no option now but to take our medicine and take another six weeks to get that right.

"It's disappointing news for Paddy there is a bit of a fresh bleed in the quad, so well reload him and build him back up from here."

The 22-year-old fractured his jaw during Friday night's loss to the Sydney Swans at the SCG and had an operation on Sunday morning to repair the damage.

"Paddy had scans yesterday and they revealed he had an undisplaced fracture in his jaw," Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid said.

"He underwent surgery this morning, it was a straight forward procedure and I would expect Paddy to miss between 1-2 weeks."

Paul Chapman stars in his first match as a Bomber, collecting 21 disposals and kicking 4 goals.

"You're only as good as your teammates let you be. It was my turn tonight to kick the goals," Chapman said.

"I thought Patty Ambrose was amazing in his first game. He took a lot of hits, did the hard stuff, set up a couple of goals.

"I was lucky to get on the end of a few and hopefully it will be his turn next week, and that's the way footy works."

Thursday, 20 March 2014
Essenon elevate forward Patrick Ambrose to its senior list, with the 22-year-old becoming a surprise inclusion in the side to face North Melbourne in their 2014 season opener at Etihad Stadium.

"We could not have been more pleased with the way Patrick has applied himself at training since we drafted him in the rookie draft," Essendon's acting general manager of football Steve Alessio said.

"He is a great athlete with both endurance and strength and we think his elevation to the senior list is a great reward for all of his hard work."
