St Kilda will have a first-hand look at top draft prospect Max King's recovery from his knee reconstruction as he spends two days a week at the club.

Under a plan ticked off by the AFL, who have also notified other clubs, the athletic key forward's program will be overseen by the Saints' medical team in conjunction with NAB AFL Academy physiotherapist Nick Ames and high-performance manager Paul Sealey.

A text message from Carlton and West Coast great Chris Judd helped lift draft prospect Max King's spirits after the talented teenager went down with a season-ending knee injury last month.

"He sent me a text saying he had shoulder reconstructions in his draft year and just gave me some great advice on how to handle that and stay positive because these things do happen but you get over them," King said.

Leading draft prospect Max King will miss the rest of the season after scans confirmed he tore his anterior cruciate ligament on the weekend.

The possible No.1 pick went down with the injury while playing for Haileybury College on Saturday against Geelong Grammar.

He left the field on a stretcher with fears he had gone down with the season-ending injury. However, clubs are still adamant he will be a top-five pick.

Melbourne will retain developing pair Mitch White and Max King on the rookie list for the 2016 season.

"Mitch and Max showed some good signs throughout the year," Melbourne football operations manager Josh Mahoney said.

"Mitch worked his way into the AFL team in the last round and didn't look out of place. Max has always been a long-term project and he continues to develop at Casey.

"They have both accepted additional years on their rookie contracts."
