Goodes said that after a successful VFL finals series last year, he was glad to continue his good form into the pre-season and be rewarded with the elevation.

"It was great to get re-rookied and have a solid pre-season and drop a few kilos and then have a good NAB (Challenge) series," Goodes said.

"A new coach, new opportunities, (I) just wanted to throughout NAB Cup put my best foot forward.

"I was always going to play as well as I could … if there was an opportunity I was willing to take it."

St Kilda selects Brett Goodes with pick No.57 in the 2014 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"We had quite a bit of experience leave the club in the last couple of months and we felt that Goodesy was too much of an important asset to lose, we still think he has something to add from a playing point of view as he was best on ground in the VFL Grand Final," Saints recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple said.

"We don't know how many AFL games he'll play but he's a unique person and we felt he still has an important role to play at our club."

After leaving Ballarat for Darwin to work for the AFL's indigenous programs, Brett Goodes thought his career was over but is now set to become one of the oldest players to debut in recent history after being given a lifeline by the Bulldogs.

"The dream was probably over when he decided to take a position in Darwin," older brother and Sydney champion Adam said.

"That was a big decision for Brett - does he stay in Ballarat or get his career going and put footy on the backburner?

"I'm really proud of Brett. It's a great story of determination, hard work and not giving up."
