Adam Selwood Biography

Sunday, 18 May 2025

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter was left "incredibly proud" of his players after their maiden win in season 2025 against St Kilda, with the Eagles channelling their emotions into a spirited performance against Euro-Yroke that served as a tribute to premiership player Adam Selwood.

"It's been one of the most emotional periods of my life that I've been through it, and I'm sure for many people at the football club it's just an incredibly challenging and sad time," McQualter said, paying his respects to the Selwood family.

"Adam had a huge influence at our football club and impacted many people that still work at our football club today.

"I just thought the way our players represented our football club today was something that I am, and we are, incredibly proud of in challenging circumstances."

Adam Selwood, a member of the AFL's famous Selwood family, passes away just three months after his twin brother Troy's death.

"We are heartbroken by the passing of Adam earlier today. Words cannot express the grief and sadness we feel," the Selwood family said in a statement.

"Adam was a loving husband, and an incredible father to Lenny and Billie. We are devastated to lose such a wonderful husband, father, son and brother.

"We will miss Adam deeply - his spirit, his kindness, and the joy he brought to every room. His determination, the lessons he shared, and his infectious personality will stay with us always."

Former AFL player Troy Selwood, who died suddenly at age 40, was remembered by his brothers as a "built-in best mate" at a memorial service.

"A twin is more than a sibling, they are a constant presence, a built-in best mate and someone who understands you in a way that no-one ever could," Adam Selwood said.

"Losing him has left a massive hole in my life. But in time, I know it will be filled with a different presence that will be just as special to me as I continue to move through life as his twin brother."

West Coast has finalised its coaching set-up for 2017, refreshing the group as the club prepares for its fourth season under Adam Simpson.

Former Docker Justin Longmuir has been appointed to the senior assistant role, with champion ruckman Dean Cox taking over as joint midfield coach with Adrian Hickmott.

Longmuir is undertaking the AFL's level four coaching course, after being part of the program's second intake at the start of 2016.

Former player Adam Selwood will head up development, Jaymie Graham will become forwards coach and Daniel Pratt will become backline and team defence coach.

Recently retired Eagle Adam Selwood joins the West Coast's coaching panel as a development coach for season 2014.

"I'm pretty excited about the opportunity and after contemplating a number of options, this felt like the best fit and right for my transition into the next phase," Selwood said.

Retiring Eagle Adam Selwood plays through pain in his final AFL game against Adelaide at Patersons Stadium.

"Nothing was going to make me miss this week," Selwood said.

"I was exhausted from being out there. I only played a half but I definitely know the game is too quick for me now.

"It was a pretty emotional time out on the field and then getting in there obviously it was a pretty sombre mood with the performance we had.

"Now it's just a matter of enjoying the career and the opportunity I've had, and I'll catch up with a few of the boys later on and just reflect on what's just happened over the last 11 years."

Injuries have prompted Eagles Adam Selwood and Mark Nicoski to announce their retirements at the age of 29.

"I ended up getting a back injury that's held me back a fair bit this year. And I just couldn't hit the heights I needed to. It affected my form," Selwood said.

"I guess you never really know when the game taps you on the shoulder, and it did that night at AAMI Stadium because I never got where an Eagles jumper ever again," Nicoski said.

It will not be a case of brotherly love when West Coast siblings Adam and Scott Selwood clash with brother Joel in the preliminary final against Geelong.

"I texted him … saying we're one day closer to smashing him on Saturday," Eagle Adam Selwood said.

"I haven't received one back yet, so I might keep sending that every day until Saturday."

Cat Joel Selwood, however, says he won't be getting into a slanging match.

"I've spoken to him throughout the week, but he does write a bit of rubbish and talk a bit of rubbish sometimes. I won't get into that," he said.

Dean Cox and Tyson Stenglein are named as Eagles vice-captains to recently appointed skipper Darren Glass with Ashley Hansen, Adam Selwood and Matthew Priddis rounding out the West Coast leadership team.

The leadership group was selected based on votes by the Eagles players. Current vice-captain Andrew Embley was elected not to remain in the leadership group.

Eagles coach John Worsfold said that Embley would still provide leadership to the team while not in an official capacity.

"He possesses certain leadership qualities that we may not have included in the ones that we got the players to vote on," Worsfold said of Embley.

"I'll go through with him the areas in the votes where he was lower in our criteria that he could be higher."

Adam Selwood sues radio shock jock John Laws and radio group Southern Cross Broadcasting, demanding damages for language used by Laws on his radio show which he deems as defamatory.

Following Selwood's on-field brawl with Docker Des Hedland over Hedland's tattoo of his daughter, Laws was critical of the behaviour of Selwood during the incident.
