Jason Ashby is delisted by Essendon after four seasons at the club.

"Jason is a terrific young man, and an extremely popular member of the playing group," Essendon football manager Rob Kerr said.

"Competition for spots as a defender has been tough, but Jason's resilience and hard work over the journey saw him rewarded with several opportunities to perform at senior level.

"Jason will always be welcome at Essendon, and on behalf of everyone at the club we wish him all the very best for his future, both on and off the field."

Jason Ashby dislocates his kneecap during a VFL practice match and is facing up to two months on the sidelines.

"Jason went down with a knee problem," Essendon's high performance manager Justin Crow said.

"We had that scanned and it turns out he had a small patella dislocation, or kneecap dislocation.

"We're looking at a couple of months out with that but sometimes players do a little bit better so there is a bit of hope there for Jase."

Jason Ashby makes his AFL debut for Essendon at the MCG with 13 disposals (7 kicks and 6 handballs) and 5 marks in an 81-point win over Carlton.
