Jesse Lonergan Biography

Tuesday, 30 October 2018
Jesse Lonergan is delisted by Gold Coast.

Lonergan played 60 games in six seasons, but only five in 2018 as he battled ongoing knee issues.

"On behalf of the club, I'd like to thank Jesse for his commitment to the club over the past six seasons, and wish him all the best for the future," Suns football boss Jon Haines said.

Jesse Lonergan admits that he will need to improve his skills to command a spot in Gold Coast's best-22.

"I'm trying to work a lot on my clean possession and my kicks, being a bit classier than just that grunt inside player," Lonergan said.

"It's probably common knowledge that I'm not the best kick going around, but I want to get on top of that. I don't have to be an amazing kick, but I want to be a consistent, reliable kick.

"And just having clean hands, I'm a bit fumbly inside. You look at all the good mids and they're one-touch players, and that's what I want to aim for."

Saturday, 29 August 2015
Jesse Lonergan signs a new two-year deal with Gold Coast.

Lonergan, 20, has been a shining light in a bleak season for the 16th-placed side.

The No.13 pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft has been one of the most improved players under first-year coach Rodney Eade, racking up 15 disposals per game from his 16 appearances through the midfield.

“I’m rapt to have re-signed - the club has been really good to me and I plan to repay them in the future," Lonergan said.

"I definitely feel as though 2016 will be a defining year for our club. We really want to build something pretty special and after a challenging year we are all pretty excited about the direction we are heading."

Tuesday, 21 May 2013
Jesse Lonergan and Henry Schade sign new deals with Gold Coast that will keep them at the club until the end of 2015.

"I'm rapt to have re-signed with the club. I've enjoyed the move to the Gold Coast and I'm loving my time up here," Lonergan said.

"I'm working really hard in the gym and with our development coaches to make sure that I'm ready for senior football as soon as possible," Schade added.

Saturday, 4 May 2013
Jesse Lonergan makes his AFL debut for Gold Coast with 9 disposals (4 kicks and 5 handballs), a mark and 7 tackles in a 45-point loss to Fremantle.
Monday, 18 March 2013
Jesse Lonergan will miss the start of the season after landing awkwardly and fracturing his hand during a practice match against Melbourne at Southport.

"Jesse has had a fantastic pre-season and had done everything possible to gain selection for the first game of the season," Gold Coast general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said.

"While the injury is extremely disappointing for Jesse, he will be back training and available for selection in the early part of the season."

Saturday, 16 February 2013
Jesse Lonergan has impressed Suns coach Guy McKenna with his work ethic at training.

"He's already mastered the art of training with intensity," McKenna said.

"He's naturally bigger and not used to the load, but he doesn't leave any stone unturned. You know you're going to get as hard a trainer as you possibly can."

Friday, 23 November 2012
Jesse Lonergan is already broader and stronger than at least half of his teammates and says he has learnt a lot from his uncle Sam who played for the Bombers.

"He's taught me pretty much everything about the game, how to pick the ball up, how to kick it, belted me up when I was a kid, so that's probably why I put on a bit of size so I don't get belted up by him," Lonergan laughed.

"He's like a big brother to me, he teaches me a lot about footy and a lot about life. I try and mould bits of my game off him."
