Alex Sexton Biography

Friday, 29 March 2019
Alex Sexton turns his back on free agency after signing a four-year contract extension to remain at the Suns until the end of 2023.

"I believe in the direction we are heading and Im up for the challenges that are ahead of us," Sexton said.

Were a really tight team and were focussed on developing a culture and building an environment that will set us up for the long term.

Gold Coast appoints David Swallow and Jarrod Witts as co-captains for the 2019 season.

Witts and Swallow will form a new look eight-man leadership group that includes Touk Miller and Pearce Hanley as vice-captains and Alex Sexton, Jarrod Harbrow, Brayden Fiorini and George Horlin-Smith.

"It's very humbling. It's quite a proud moment for myself," Swallow said.

"I'm really confident with the program and the leaders underneath that we'll see success in the near future."

Under new coach Stuart Dew, Alex Sexton has made a home for himself in the Suns' forward line.

With 27 goals to his name so far in the season, Sexton will likely finish as the club's leading goalkicker for 2018.

"He's been amazing and personally giving me the clarity in my role," Sexton said of Dew.

Dew says he has been pleasantly surprised by Sexton's output this year.

"He's a great player around the club. He's had a really good year and he does go under the radar externally," Dew said.

"I've been quite surprised. He's one, in my first month or two, where I thought, why haven't I heard more about this guy?"

Thursday, 19 May 2016
Alex Sexton re-signs with Gold Coast and will remain at the club until the end of 2019.

Sexton was in good form for the Suns before he was struck down with the club's injury curse, breaking his arm in round seven.

"He has outstanding character, has shown great football promise, and will boast a bright future on the Gold Coast for years to come," Suns list manager Scott Clayton said.

Sexton said playing at a club so close to home made it an easy decision for him to re-commit to the club and he expected the Suns to work their way through this difficult period.

"Even though we are being challenged at the moment, I see an exciting future ahead, and believe the club is heading in the right direction. We really do have such a unique opportunity to achieve something special for this city," Sexton said.

"To have the opportunity to live out my AFL dream so close to family and friends is something I dont take for granted, and am committed to helping this team reach the ultimate success."

Tuesday, 4 August 2015
Gold Coast's midfield stocks have been further depleted with Mitch Hallahan (arm) and Alex Sexton (knee) ruled out for the season.

Hallahan has missed the past two weeks and the club fears another knock would do further damage to his arm.

Sexton was absent from Saturday's draw against West Coast after suffering the knee injury against Adelaide the previous week.

Jarrod Harbrow, Danny Stanley and Alex Sexton sign new contracts to remain with Gold Coast.

"The first couple of years were challenging, but the team is going in the right direction," Harbrow said.

"We've got a really good group who are desperate for Gold Coast to succeed."

Monday, 2 July 2012
Exciting Suns Jaeger O'Meara and Alex Sexton are both set for season-ending surgery.

"Jaeger's surgery has been on the radar for some time and following consultation with our medical team, the surgeon and Jaeger, we determined that it would be in his best interests to have surgery during the back half of this season," Suns general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said.

Friday, 18 May 2012
Alex Sexton will become the first player from the Suns Academy to make his AFL debut after being named in the side to take on the Western Bulldogs.

"I was going in to have a look at my edits to play NEAFL footy and got called in to be told I was having my first crack at it this weekend," Sexton said.

"I didn't think I'd be playing this early but I'm absolutely stoked. Hopefully it's the start of what I'm hoping will be a big career."
