Corey Gault retires from AFL football to return home to his original WAFL club Swan Districts.

Gault played six AFL games for the Magpies in five years, the last three of which were spent on the club's rookie list.

"Corey is an upstanding young man who persisted through injuries and setbacks to earn his opportunities at senior level," Collingwood list manager Derek Hine said.

"We are understanding of his decision to return home to family and friends, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Corey Gault says he wants to repay the Magpies for sticking by him after numerous injury issues.

The 23-year-old was promoted to the senior list during the week, with the Magpies able to elevate a player as a nominated rookie, after an impressive NAB Challenge campaign.

“I know that I’ve always given my all to the club and my body’s let me down in the past,” Gault said.

“For them (the Magpies) to keep me for five years is a big effort. I do feel indebted to the club. I’m just hoping I can repay them with good form.”

Collingwood officially promotes key forward Corey Gault to its senior list.

The club was entitled to elevate a player to its senior list under the AFL's rules relating to nominating a rookie.

Gault edged out American teammate Mason Cox for the nomination after booting eight goals in three NAB Challenge matches.

The 23-year-old has played four games for Collingwood and is in his third-year on the Magpies' rookie list.
