Claye Beams Biography

Thursday, 6 September 2018
Brisbane has cut five players from its list, led by experienced trio Tom Bell, Rohan Bewick and Claye Beams.

The Lions have also delisted utility Marco Paparone and rookie-listed midfielder Jake Barrett.

None of the five played regular senior footy in 2018, but the cull means some age and games experience leaves the club.

Dayne Beams recently lost his father Philip to bowel cancer, missing both pre-season matches as the Lions gave their captain – and brother Claye Beams - all the time and space he needed.

Now just nine days before his season opener, Beams has spoken about what he expects to feel when he runs out against the Saints.

"We're wearing black armbands in honour of my dad," Beams said.

"I think it'll hit me at the end of the game - I've got a lot of family coming. There's no avoiding that it's going to be hard.

"Even the first home game (against Melbourne in round two) is going to be hard because I travelled to and from games with dad, so it's going to be a little different without him in the passenger's seat."

Thursday, 26 October 2017
Brisbane's dramatic reshaping under first-year coach Chris Fagan has continued with another five players axed on Thursday.

Key forward Michael Close, free agent Claye Beams – brother of captain Dayne – Irishman Cian Hanley, forward Matt Hammelmann and rookie Reuben William are the Lions' latest delistings.

Daniel Menzel heads a list of six players overlooked in this year's free agency period.

Menzel did not receive an offer from a rival team by Sunday's 5pm deadline, while fellow free agents Nick Suban (Fremantle), Ben Howlett (Essendon), Simon White (Carlton), Ben Sinclair (Collingwood) and Claye Beams (Brisbane Lions) were all left in limbo too.

Beams tore his medial-meniscus when playing in the NEAFL.

Thursday, 4 June 2015
Claye Beams will miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

It was originally hoped Beams would miss just a month, but coach Justin Leppitsch revealed a far worse outcome.

"Unfortunately they've had to stitch his cartilage back together and that's usually a 12 to 14 week injury," Leppitsch said.

"So if you do the numbers, it probably means his season."

Tuesday, 2 June 2015
Claye Beams is set for surgery on an injured medial ligament in his left knee.

Beams will miss a minimum of three to four weeks, but the club is fearful of damage to the meniscus, which would sideline the luckless youngster longer.

Claye Beams and Jono Freeman each sign two-year contract extensions with Brisbane.

"They are both very good young players and have really bright futures with our football club," Lions football manager Dean Warren said.

"The fact they are both Queenslanders makes it that bit sweeter for the local game, and shows the kind of talent the game in Queensland can produce."

Claye Beams will miss up to eight weeks after scans confirm a fractured foot.

The injury, to the fifth metatarsal of his left foot, was sustained during the Lion's practice match against the Sydney Swans.

"We are certain that the resilience and absolute professionalism that Claye has displayed throughout his previous rehabilitation will get him through this tough period," general manager of football operations Dean Warren said.

Monday, 3 February 2014
Coming out of contract at the end of the year, Claye Beams hopes to have a big 2014 after recovering from a knee reconstruction.

"I reckon the best year of footy I had was in my first year when I was a rookie and I wasn't guaranteed a spot on the list let alone a senior game," Beams said.

"Being out of contract at the end of the year (as well), they're two tough challenges.

"I've got to play footy to retain my spot on the list. I look forward to the challenge ahead."

Thursday, 11 April 2013
Claye Beams will likely miss the rest of the season after rupturing his left ACL at training.

"Claye had an outstanding pre-season and was consolidating his position in our best 22, so understandably he is devastated by this setback," Lions general manager of football operations Dean Warren said.

"We are certain Claye's strong character will get him through this tough period and that he will approach his rehabilitation with absolute professionalism."

Lion Claye Beams can thank his brother, Collingwood's Dayne, for his career in the AFL.

"Watching Dayne play footy again reignited my bug and I started playing again and was lucky enough to play here," Claye said.

"He told me to get off my arse and do something. He was supportive and one of the main reasons I got back out there.

"I'd sat out half the (2009) season already and thought I might have left my run a bit late, but I thought 'Stuff it, I've got nothing to lose', so I gave it a crack and was lucky enough."

A fitter Claye Beams has also added bulk to his frame as he plots to make an impact in 2012.

"I came to the club pretty skinny. I hadn't touched a weight in my life," Beams said.

"So I got a pretty rude awakening after coming to the club and realising just how much time you spend in the gym. I came in weighing 76kg and I weigh around 83kg now."

New draftee Claye Beams says he was made to feel welcome at his new club, the Brisbane Lions.

"I was pretty nervous when I showed up, with guys like Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola there," the Gold Coast product said.

"But they are all really good blokes and all came up and talked to us and made us feel welcome. They made it a hell of a lot easier to settle in.

"I had a meeting with the Lions and they got in touch with me after the national draft and said they were interested, so it was great to get picked up by the club."
