Richmond rookie Relton Roberts speaks of his regret at giving up AFL football to return home to the Northern Territory for personal reasons.

"I wanted to play AFL footy but I found it really hard with my family up here and me down there in Melbourne," Roberts told the NT News.

"Thinking back I probably should have stayed and played AFL. Particularly when my family situation changed a fair bit after I got back home."

Relton Roberts was handed a club-imposed one-week suspension by Richmond after being caught indulging in a late-night drinking session.

Relton Roberts makes his AFL debut for Richmond at the MCG with 7 disposals (7 kicks), 5 marks and a tackle in a 56-point loss to Carlton.

Mature-age rookie Graham Polak is elevated to Richmond's senior list along with indigenous forward Relton Roberts.

"I was really excited when I heard the news," Polak said.

"I am really grateful to the club and all the Richmond fans. I couldn't have got through this difficult time without my family, (fiancee) Alyce and my teammates."
