Ben Sinclair Biography

Monday, 30 October 2017
Injuries have forced Ben Sinclair out of the game, with the Collingwood defender retiring at the age of 26.

Sinclair played just 63 games in eight years, having started a battle with hamstring problems in 2014 after early issues with shin splints.

In 2016, he suffered four concussions in 14 rounds; the last of which ended his season five weeks early.

In 2017, he badly tore a hamstring tendon in a pre-season game against Essendon, and despite seeing a specialist again mid-year after struggling with subsequent nerve entrapment, failed to get back on the field.

Daniel Menzel heads a list of six players overlooked in this year's free agency period.

Menzel did not receive an offer from a rival team by Sunday's 5pm deadline, while fellow free agents Nick Suban (Fremantle), Ben Howlett (Essendon), Simon White (Carlton), Ben Sinclair (Collingwood) and Claye Beams (Brisbane Lions) were all left in limbo too.

Ben Sinclair will need surgery to repair the hamstring tendon he tore in Collingwood's JLT Community Series win over Essendon.

"Scans have confirmed Ben has suffered a reasonably serious tear," Magpies football manager Geoff Walsh said.

"Surgery, probably sometime next week, seems likely but the precise details of when that might be and how long his recovery might take won't be known until he has seen the surgeon."

Ben Sinclair suffers a hamstring injury during Collingwood's JLT Community Series win over Essendon.

"He's pretty sore but we'll get it scanned and see how he goes," Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said post-game.

"He's put a lot of work in but we'll see what the extent of the injury is and then we'll get on with it. It's unfortunate for him but we take it on the chin, get it right and then move on."

Monday, 25 July 2016
Collingwood is "very concerned" about Ben Sinclair's fourth concussion of the season, with the Pies deciding not to rush the defender back onto the field anytime soon.

Sinclair was involved in a heavy collision with North Melbourne's Jed Anderson on Friday night and was taken to hospital after the game as a precaution.

That follows head knocks against Melbourne (round four), West Coast (round six) and at training ahead of the Pies' clash against Geelong in round nine.

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley was unable to put an exact timeframe on Sinclair's return, but said the backman would not be risked against West Coast this Saturday.

Sunday, 24 April 2016
Lingering effects of concussion have forced Collingwood defender Ben Sinclair to withdraw from the Anzac Day clash with Essendon.
Friday, 28 August 2015
Ben Sinclair signs a two-year contract extension with Collingwood, emphasising his importance to the Magpies' developing backline ahead of his 50th AFL game against Geelong.

The new deal will see Sinclair remain at the club until the end of 2017.

Monday, 13 April 2015
Ben Sinclair's is set to miss up to six weeks with a hamstring injury.

Sinclair injured his right hamstring in the first quarter of the Magpies' 27-point loss to Adelaide, forcing the Magpies to substitute him out of the game soon after.

"Sadly, Benny, who has been going really well hurt his hamstring," Collingwood director of football Neil Balme said.

"He'll miss a while but we're not quite sure how bad it is but it's certainly not good news."

Tuesday, 12 June 2012
Collingwood's Ben Sinclair is named the AFL's round 11 NAB Rising Star nominee following a superb performance against the Demons where he tallied 12 disposals, 5 marks and 3 goals.

"In the first half of this year Ben has consistently been impacting on games for us," Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said.

"His contested footy, his pressure on the opposition and his ability to regularly get on the scoreboard have become really valuable and important to our flexibility."

"Right now he's one of our first picked, certainly one of the first picked of our small forwards."

Sunday, 31 July 2011
Ben Sinclair makes his AFL debut for Collingwood at the MCG with 8 disposals (6 kicks and 2 handballs), a mark, a tackle and a goal in a 74-point win over Essendon.
Wednesday, 13 April 2011
Collingwood midfielder Ben Sinclair is determined to play senior football this season despite an early season injury setback when he suffered a leg fracture.

"It is a little bit frustrating but you just work harder at going out to get another shot to get into the seniors," he said.

"You've just got to keep playing well in the VFL so you can get your chance. When I get back playing pain-free, I'll just keep playing as best I can so I can hopefully get a senior game."
