Sam Shaw Biography

Monday, 28 November 2016
Adelaide says it sacrificed a list spot with one of its rookie selections to protect the welfare of Sam Shaw.

Ongoing concussion issues forced Shaw to call time on his career earlier this month after playing 24 games in seven seasons.

"With the collective bargaining agreement still not finalised, it was an administrative judgement to give him the protection from a welfare point of view," Reid said.

"It gives Sam the protection from a welfare point of view and the protection of the CBA going forward because it's a career-ending injury."

Wednesday, 9 November 2016
Sam Shaw retires from AFL football following the effects of concussion on his career.

"The last seven years at the club have provided me with amazing opportunities and exposure to so many great people, who enable the club to run on a daily basis and have also helped shape me into the person I am today," Shaw said.

"I am thankful for the eternal friendships I have forged and those who have supported me during this time.

"It is with a heavy heart and through much deliberation with the assistance of friends, health professionals and my ever-supportive family to step away from professional football and focus on my health."

The playing future of Sam Shaw is up in the air after he was ruled out of the rest of the season with concussion symptoms.

Shaw was sidelined for four months after suffering a concussion in a SANFL game in April.

He played strongly in his comeback match against Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval three weeks ago, but was a late scratching from the game with Norwood last Saturday.

"Our real interest is in Sam's health," Adelaide coach Don Pyke said.

"That's the priority for us at the moment, to get him feeling like a healthy, young man.

"With the concussion and the symptoms he's suffering, which sort of manifests itself and a bit of fatigue, it's important we look after his interests.

"We'll look after the football side of things after that."

Wednesday, 14 October 2015
Adelaide announces that Sam Shaw has signed a two-year deal tying him to the Crows until the end of 2017, while Mitch Grigg has also re-signed for 2016.
Thursday, 11 April 2013
Sam Shaw is placed on Adelaide's long-term injury list after suffering a grade two tear to his left hamstring at training.

"Sam is an important player in our team and we want to make 100 per cent sure he's fit and ready to go for the second half of the season," Adelaide's general manager of football administration Phil Harper said.

Tuesday, 21 August 2012
Adelaide defender Sam Shaw has brushed injury aside to find consistency and a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after tallying 21 kicks from 22 disposals in round 21 against the Lions at the Gabba.
Wednesday, 18 July 2012
Young Crow Sam Shaw will miss the match against West Coast with an eye injury suffered against the Giants.

"Sam had some blurred vision when he got hit on Sunday and he was off for most of the second quarter but he was able to come back on and contribute strongly to the team's win," Crows football operations manager Phil Harper said.

"Sam then saw a specialist back in Adelaide on Monday and he has some bleeding behind the eye, so he's been advised to not train or play this week."

Saturday, 21 April 2012
Sam Shaw makes his AFL debut for Adelaide at Football Park with 13 disposals (12 kicks and a handball), 3 marks and 3 tackles in a 46-point win over GWS.
