Former Fremantle defender Roger Hayden has been appointed as the club's development coach.

"There's a few players that have been around for two or three years and they need to take the next step," Hayden said.

"Just to help out is great for me and it's the next best thing if I'm not playing."

A long-term foot injury has forced Fremantle defender Roger Hayden into retirement.

Hayden broke his fibula in round 17 against Sydney.

"Going through the rehab again, especially at my age, the healing process takes a little bit longer," Hayden said.

"I had a chat with my family and, in the best interests of my body, I've decided to retire."

Fremantle's Roger Hayden will miss the rest of the home and away season after fracturing his fibula.

Roger Hayden has undergone surgery after breaking his leg in the match against North Melbourne and will miss 6-8 weeks.

"It was not until after Roger had scans on his leg and seen an orthopaedic surgeon yesterday that the full extent of the injury was able to be determined," General manager of football operations Chris Bond said.

"Roger fractured the fibula in his leg and had a plate inserted during surgery today.

"Given the nature of the injury we expect at this stage that he will miss between six to eight weeks."

Fremantle defender Roger Hayden is set to miss Sunday's clash with Essendon at Etihad Stadium with a hamstring injury.
