Scott West Biography

Tuesday, 3 July 2018
For Rhylee West, the advice his dad, Scott West, has given him across his football career has him in a position where the Bulldogs are considering him as a father-son selection in November's NAB AFL Draft.

"I've got a special opportunity where my dad is my coach. Every bloke hopefully has a dad that's their coach, but mine's a bit different in that he played 324 games and he doesn't let me forget it," Rhylee said.

"That's not something that every kid's dad gets to do. And his teachings are from the best and that's why I've excelled so much and become the player I am today because of that."

Ryan Griffen reflects on his early days at the Bulldogs when he was mentored by Scott West.

"Scotty was my mentor for the first three years I was there, and he really taught me how to get the best out of myself," Griffen said.

"He was such a competitor and was ruthless on the track in terms of standards, and the way he trained was unbelievable to watch.

"It was scary sometimes, but he expected everyone to train to a standard he expected, and it taught you pretty quickly that it was a pretty serious business."

Scott West quits as coach of VFL club Werribee in hopes of pursuing an AFL coaching role.

"When you coach your own team, you certainly understand a lot more – the medical side, the physio, the scheduling of your own program, how to deal with 50 individual players, working out the best ways to teach, and all those sorts of things," West said.

"I think it now enables me to go back into the (AFL) system in any role. As a midfield player, that's ideally where you'd coach, but … it enables me to have a skill set now to coach any line or any phase of the game."

Wednesday, 24 September 2008
The Western Bulldogs inform veteran Scott West that he will no longer be required as a player at the club in 2009.

"Westy has been an integral part of our leadership group and it has been devastating to see someone who has played so many years with minimal injuries to finish his career in such frustrating way." Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade said.

"He is regarded as one of our all time great players and we hope to honour him in the coming months the way a club legend should be honoured."

Tuesday, 13 November 2007
West puts off retirement talks until the end of the 2008 season. "I'll probably sit down at the end of the 2008 season and honestly assess where I think am at and sit down with Rodney and see what they want to move forward with," West said.
