Nigel Lappin Biography

Monday, 22 January 2024
Nigel Lappin will run the Cats' development program in 2024, following an off-season of changes to the football department at Kardinia Park.

The 47-year-old has replaced Matt Egan in the role after the former Cat moved to the Western Bulldogs as coaching and performance manager during the off-season.

Nigel Lappin is inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

He famously played the 2003 Grand Final with broken ribs and a punctured lung.

"I only had one rib that was fully fractured," he said at the induction ceremony.

"I had a couple of others that were fractured.

"It was a tough week. I remember my wife had to help me out of bed for the first couple of days of the week."

Geelong runner Nigel Lappin has been fined $2000 for running into Carlton's Mitch Robinson during the frantic finish to last Friday's clash between the Cats and Blues at Etihad Stadium.

However, Lappin's fine is suspended, so if he stays out of trouble for 12 months, he won't need to hand over the cash.

Lappin walked front-on into Robinson's path with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock, prompting the fiery midfielder to push Lappin away.

"The AFL accepts that the Geelong runner stumbled after tripping on the foot of a Geelong player and inadvertently moved into the path of an opposition Carlton player, but all club officials must not put themselves in any position where they may interefere with the duties of an umpire or an opposition player's role in the game," AFL general manager of football operations Mark Evans said.

Nigel Lappin announces his retirement from football after enduring an achilles injury that has kept him out of action since round four.
Thursday, 14 February 2008
The Brisbane Lions head into the 2008 AFL season with four players sharing the captaincy role including Jonathan Brown, Luke Power, Simon Black and Nigel Lappin.

"Prior to 2007 we decided that a multiple co-captains model would be preferred to the singular captaincy system and it worked really well in practice, so this model will continue in 2008," Lions coach Leigh Matthews said.
