For the best part of two decades, young footballers from Far North Queensland have made the long trek north to the tip of the Cape York peninsula for a tournament that's about more than just a game.

About 120 youngsters from Cape York, Cairns and the Torres Strait Islands take part in the Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre Cup each year in Bamaga, a town about 40km from the northernmost point of mainland Australia.

"Football's able to give us that vehicle to teach leadership, culture and respect and responsibility to these young people," Johnson said.

"If we can build them down at the AFL Cape York House and build them up to be leaders to come back and be leaders within their community, I think we've done a great job."

Eddie Betts joins the AFL All-Australian selection panel, replacing Chris Johnson, who has departed after five years to pursue his business interests.

"During my playing career being named an All-Australian was always a tremendous honour, the prestige of being named in the team is something I remember fondly," Betts said.

"Footy continues to be a passion of mine, I am enjoying my time in the media with Fox Footy and I am excited to join the committee and play a part in selecting the best of the best."

Former Lions star Chris Johnson will coach level one of the AIS-AFL Academy.

"I'm delighted that Chris has agreed to expand his current role within the AFL's multicultural and indigenous program to share his vast experience with our next generation of future stars," AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan said.
