Michael Jamison Biography

Friday, 21 April 2017
Jimmy Bartel and former Michael Jamison have joined the AFL's Match Review Panel for the remainder of this season.

Chris Knights has stepped away from his position on the MRP due to work commitments, meaning the panel has effectively grown by one member due to the new appointments.

Monday, 8 August 2016
Michael Jamison announces his retirement from AFL football despite being contracted for 2017.

Jamison, 30, was a key member of the Blues' defence for almost a decade but played just five senior games this year.

The key defender last played in the round eight win over Port Adelaide and subsequently played just one VFL game a month ago, having been sidelined with illness for several weeks mid-season.

"In recent times, I have found it increasingly hard to prepare, both physically and mentally, for the rigours of the sport," Jamison said.

"Being a representative of our football club demands an individual give nothing short of 100 per cent, and I've come to the realisation that I can no longer sustain the intensity required to play AFL.

"Since I made the decision to retire, I've had a chance to recall some of my achievements over my 10-year journey at the Blues. Experiences like going from a rookie-listed player to captaining the team on occasions and my tenure as vice-captain seem surreal, and I thank the club for allowing me to represent it in those prestigious positions."

Friday, 15 April 2016
Michael Jamison is dropped from Carlton's side to take on the Western Bulldogs, with Blues coach Brendon Bolton saying the key defender needs to improve his effort and consistency.

"[His form] is a little bit indicative of our team of late, giving effort a little bit inconsistent," Bolton said.

"We're changing our mix down back this week, so there's that layer and there's the layer of some inconsistencies.

"What I do know is 'Jamo' is working really hard to improve … he'll fight back, there's no doubt about that."

Marc Murphy is reappointed as Carlton captain for 2016, but the Blues have overhauled their leadership group with the skipper and Bryce Gibbs the only survivors from the 2015 line-up.

In the new-look team, veteran Kade Simpson will take over as sole vice-captain from Murphy's 2015 joint deputies Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison.

Youngsters Patrick Cripps, 20, and Sam Docherty, 22, are among five additions to the 2016 group, as the Blues' next generation of leaders begins to emerge.

Hard-running midfielder Ed Curnow, 26, also joins the leadership team for the first time, while former members Simpson, 31, and Andrew Walker, 29, return after one-year absences.

Walker said Murphy had always loomed as the logical captaincy choice.

"After the tough year that we had and the amount of scrutiny that he copped I think the natural thing would have been for somebody to go into their shell," Walker said.

"But he has always stood up and really been at the forefront for the Carlton footy club. He copped a lot of scrutiny, but I think the way he was able to come out of it and the amount of confidence he's still got to lead the footy club is going to be great for us going forward."

Michael Jamison says he let his emotions get the better of him when he refused to shake hands with former teammate Mitch Robinson after the Blues' loss to the Brisbane Lions.

Jamison turned his back on Robinson, who joined the Lions this season after six years and 100 matches at Carlton, when he approached him after the final siren.

A clearly disappointed Robinson told Fox Sports he was "a bit annoyed" at Jamison's response.

"I went to go and see 'Jamo' after the game. We had a few words during the game and he just turned his back on me," Robinson said.

Jamison said of the post-match snub, "Unfortunately I let the emotion and the disappointment of the result get the better of me."

"I just let my emotions boil over."

Tuesday, 2 December 2014
Carlton cuts it's leadership group from eight to five.

Sam Rowe is a new addition to the group while Andrew Carrazzo, Kade Simpson, Andrew Walker and the delisted Brock McLean have left the group.

Existing leadership group members include Marc Murphy, who will continue as captain, Michael Jamison, Bryce Gibbs and Lachie Henderson.

Thursday, 15 May 2014
Michael Jamison has signed a new three-year deal with Carlton that will keep him at the club until the end of 2017.

"The club's obviously shown terrific faith in me, it's now up to me to repay that over the next few years," Jamison told The Footy Show.

"I let my management deal with anything that came my way but I told them from the start it was always my intention to stay."

Thursday, 30 January 2014
Carlton has announced an expanded eight-man leadership group for 2014 to be headed by second-year captain Marc Murphy.

Andrew Carrazzo and Kade Simpson will be joint vice-captains, while defender Michael Jamison returns to the group after 12 months in the role of deputy vice-captain.

As well as Jamison, Bryce Gibbs, Lachie Henderson, Brock McLean and Andrew Walker are new inclusions for 2014.

"We have the experienced leadership of Simpson and Carrazzo, together with Brock McLean who is a strong voice both on and off the field," Blues general manager of football operations Andrew McKay said.

"After 12 months out of the leadership group, Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison return, which is great to see, because they're two very important and respected figures within the playing group.

"We're also pleased to see Andrew Walker and Lachie Henderson step up – both have come off a terrific season in 2013, finishing second and third respectively in the best and fairest."

After being plagued with shoulder injuries, Michael Jamison has managed to play every game so far in 2012 and will reach 100 games when Carlton take on Sydney this week.

"I'm in a position now where I don't think about it, which is really good," Jamison said about his shoulders.

"It's feeling great and it's at the stage where I tape it up every week and do my rehab."

Tuesday, 2 April 2013
Michael Jamison says he left the Blues' leadership group to focus on footy.

"I just thought the best thing I could do for the footy club was to stay healthy, stay fit and play well," Jamison said.

"The best way to do that was to step down from the leadership group and focus on staying fit and get my body right, and I thought we had young and impressive leaders ready to step in to it."

Tuesday, 11 December 2012
Carlton has named five players to its leadership group including Nick Duigan who joins Andrew Carrazzo, Kade Simpson, Jarrad Waite and Marc Murphy.

Bryce Gibbs and Michael Jamison, leaders in 2012, have been left out of the group, along with former skipper Chris Judd who has decided to focus solely on football in 2013.

Friday, 9 November 2012
Defender Michael Jamison says his body has healed after a tough 2012 and he is ready to attack Carlton's pre-season.

"Having no surgery (during the off-season) was certainly a huge benefit," Jamison said.

"You don't start behind the eight-ball, so I'm feeling pretty fit and looking to work on that in the next few weeks.

"You're can't compare pre-seasons when you have surgery in the off-season and then you don't."

Wednesday, 8 August 2012
Michael Jamison may miss just one match after scans revealed his hamstring injury is only minor.

"It's a low-grade strain of the hamstring so he will be out for one or two weeks," Blues football manager Andrew McKay said.

"We are hoping one, but it may end up being two. The scan shows there is a very, very small amount of swelling in the area, so [it is] not too bad."

Thursday, 28 June 2012
Michael Jamison says the Blues have moved beyond the Brock McLean Twitter storm after the midfielder accepted his punishment.

"He's apologised, he's accepted the penalty and he's just looking forward to playing tomorrow night," Jamison said.

"The guys are educated on what to say and what not to say so, knowing that, Brock did the right thing and pulled the tweet down. He's accepted responsibility, he's apologised for it and we're looking forward to moving on."

Wednesday, 14 March 2012
Michael Jamison has resumed full training and will play in the VFL next week.

"[My back] is going well, I'm back into full training now, I won't play this week but the plan is to play the week after," Jamison said.

"After running laps of the boundary, you get pretty excited to get back training and also get back playing, so I'm looking forward to that in a couple of weeks."

Wednesday, 8 February 2012
Key Carlton defender Michael Jamison will miss the start of the NAB Cup after suffering a stress reaction in his back.

"He has got a bit of a hot spot in his back, but it's not a serious one, so I think he's just going to be backed off training over the next two or three weeks," Carlton chief executive Greg Swann told SEN radio.

"It's not ideal, but it's not the end of the world for us."

Saturday, 20 August 2011
Carlton defender Michael Jamison kicks his first goal in the AFL against the Hawks in his first game back after almost two months on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

"It was a nice moment, but more than anything it will get the boys off my back, they have been continually reminding me that I hadn't kicked a goal, so it's going to be nice to put an end to that," Jamison said.

Friday, 19 August 2011
Carlton defender Michael Jamison will return to the side for the first time since Round 14 and teammate Andrew Carrazzo says his presence be a big psychological boost for the Blues.

"Everyone in the team is fully aware how important Jamo is, so the quicker we can get him back the better," Carrazzo said.

"You get a lot of reassurance with Jamo back. You know what you're going to get from him and he's obviously a great leader for the backline."

Tuesday, 9 August 2011
Carlton is optimistic key defender Michael Jamison will play again this season.

"He thinks he will play this year. We've always said he'll be ready when he's ready and that date is sooner rather than later," Carlton football manager Stephen Icke said.

"He's going to make a contribution and we're working towards having him ready for the Hawks game in two weeks,"

Monday, 27 June 2011
Key Carlton defender Michael Jamison will have surgery and is expected to be out of action for a month after tearing the meniscus in his left knee against West Coast.
Thursday, 21 April 2011
Defender Michael Jamison has penned a new three-year deal with Carlton.

"It's obviously a really positive thing for me and it's great to get it done pretty early so I can just concentrate on the season now," Jamison said.

"As AFL players we're probably in a bit of a different position to a lot of people in that we get the contract first and then do the work after. I understand that it's a show of good faith by the club and now I've got to repay them for that faith."

Monday, 29 November 2010
Carlton defender Michael Jamison says ruckman Matthew Kreuzer is on pace for a return early in the 2011 season.

"He's going really well. If someone in the club was going to hurt their knee - which is not ideal - but in terms of someone who is going to get back as quick as possible, he's the bloke," Jamison said.

"He's done a tremendous amount of work. He was in here all of the off-season, so he'll be back as soon as anyone [could be]."

Thursday, 13 August 2009
Michael Jamison is sent in for groin surgery, ending his campaign for 2009 after rehabilition failed to address the injury.
Wednesday, 12 August 2009
A fitness trial will determine Carlton Michael Jamison's season as the defender struggles to overcome a persistent injury that limits his running capacity.

"He had the injection over the weekend and they normally say the longer you can leave it, the better," Blues football manager Steven Icke said.

"So, he'll look to train on Thursday and then we'll make a decision on whether we'll take the long-term view or still try and get him up."

Tuesday, 4 August 2009
An ongoing groin problem could derail the season for Carlton defender Michael Jamison.

Jamison will undergo tests later this week to determine the extent of the problem.

"I think we'll find out a bit more on Friday exactly where he's at," Carlton coach Brett Ratten said.

"Will he be right for the following week? Is he out for the year? I don't know, we're sort of just sitting here and waiting.

"We'll give him every opportunity to prove one way or the other whether he's right or not right. We're just waiting on some results."
