Clinton Jones Biography

Sunday, 12 October 2014
With the restricted and unrestricted free agency period closed as of 5pm Sunday, former Bomber Leroy Jetta, former Saint Clint Jones, and Port Adelaide utility Tom Logan remain the only players on the free agent list who want to play on but are yet to be contracted for 2015.

Those three players will now have to hope to be picked up during the delisted free agency period, which begins on November 1.

Discarded St Kilda midfielder Clint Jones believes he still has plenty to offer at AFL level and will keep training in the hope of reviving his career at a second club.

"I still want to keep playing. I feel I'd be a good fit for a club that wants a mature body, someone that's versatile," Jones said.

"I've played a pretty significant role over the years and I'm physically fit; I haven't really missed training or a game in four years.

"I started [playing AFL] at 23, so from that point of view I still feel I've got the body of a much younger player.

"I feel like I have plenty to offer and can still play my best footy, so hopefully I'll get an opportunity somewhere."

St Kilda has wasted no time in delisting Clinton Jones and James Gwilt immediately following the Saints' final game of 2014, a 79-point loss to Adelaide.

"We had a conversation earlier in the week that there won't be a position for those two guys going forward," St Kilda coach Alan Richardson said.

"We had a fantastic conversation with all their teammates behind closed doors after the game to talk about what they meant to our footy club … we spoke to them Tuesday to say that there would not be a contract offer.

"That's where we're at, that's the journey we're on - we need to bring in young players. Given where we're at … we need to go to the draft."

St Kilda players have personally phoned every member who lodged a complaint with the club about this week's Mad Monday fiasco following Clinton Jones' antics.

St Kilda players release a video, apologising to club members for Clint Jones' Mad Monday prank earlier this week when he set fire to a dwarf.

Captain Nick Riewoldt, vice-captain Lenny Hayes and young star Jack Steven spoke on the short video, which was shot outside the Saints' Seaford headquarters.

"On behalf of the players, I want to say sorry for the disappointment and embarrassment our end-of-season actions have caused all St Kilda people," Riewoldt said in the short video message.

Hayes added: "It's not the St Kilda you want, it's not the St Kilda we want.

"Our commitment is it's going to look different."

Then Steven finished with: "Stay with us - we going to make you proud to be a member of the Saints."

Clinton Jones has been ordered to donate $3000 to charity after being revealed as the player responsible for setting fire to a dwarf entertainer's clothes at a Mad Monday function.

"I sincerely apologise to Mr Johnston and have done so personally today. As a playing group we were engaged in end of season activities which in hindsight were quite childish. I made an error of judgement in including Mr Johnston in the activity," Jones said.

"I am embarrassed if this has caused angst and certainly had no intention to cause any harm to anyone, including the St Kilda Football Club and its members."

Wednesday, 21 August 2013
Clinton Jones says he hopes to be able to play on with the Saints in 2014 as a leader of the club.

"Physically my body is in pretty good shape and I love playing footy," Jones said.

"With the young group we've got, and potentially with a few senior guys retiring, it's a good opportunity to maybe step up and have a stronger leadership role."

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says tagger Clinton Jones did not play in the drawn Grand Final against Collingwood with a broken foot despite this being reported as the case by the Herald Sun.

"I went and found Clint and said you're not playing because apparently you've got a broken foot," Lyon said.

"Everyone's looking for a story. People run stories that aren't accurate and I can guarantee you this, Clinton Jones hasn't got a broken foot. Because if he did he wouldn't be playing and I certainly wouldn't be putting him to elite midfielders of the competition."

St Kilda has rewarded super-tagger Clint Jones for his outstanding form by handing over the famous No. 4 guernsey Darrel Baldock wore when captained the Saints to their only premiership in 1966.
Monday, 13 July 2009
West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis says he enjoyed taking on Saints tagger Clinton Jones - again.

Priddis and Jones were no strangers to one another having played plenty of big WAFL games against one another when Priddis was at Subiaco and Jones at South Fremantle before the two went on to AFL careers.

"Clint has had a fantastic year and it's a different role for him. He previously had always been a wingman, but this year has been a tagging midfielder and has had a fantastic season," Priddis said.

"It was good to have another battle with him. His role now is a lot more in and under, and a negating role and it's different for him, but he's definitely been a great positive for St Kilda this year."
