Matthew White Biography

Sunday, 29 October 2017
Port Adelaide delist Matthew White.

"Matthew came to Port Adelaide in 2014 and has been a really important member of the squad with his speed and ability to hit the scoreboard," Power football manager Chris Davies said.

"Regrettably, injury robbed Matthew of all but a few minutes of football in 2016, but he fought back to make an impact in the AFL in 2017 and was also a great leader with our young SANFL team."

Sunday, 22 January 2017
After missing all but 10 minutes of last season through injury, Port Adelaide veteran Matthew White admits he faces a battle to regain his spot in the Power's best 22.

"It's going to be a nice little fight to try and get my spot back that I had semi-cemented," White said.

"The boys finished the year off really well and they've come back in good nick, so I'm still chasing them around.

"I like having my back against the wall and I've got to fight like I'm a first-year player again."

Saturday, 13 August 2016
Matthew White's injury-ravaged season has come to an end, with the Port Adelaide midfielder fracturing a cheekbone in the SANFL.

Port Adelaide released a statement on the club website on Saturday night saying the speedster would undergo surgery next week.

Wednesday, 15 June 2016
Matt White signs a one-year contract extension that will tie him to the Power until the end of 2017.

"I'm really excited to commit to Port Adelaide, this is a great footy club and I've loved the time we've spent here," White said.

"To sign on for another year gives me a chance to keep playing with these great guys and I?m really looking forward to the next 18 months of footy."

Monday, 4 April 2016
Matt White is placed on Port Adelaide's long-term injury list as he recovers from a pectoral injury.
Wednesday, 30 March 2016
Matt White will be sidelined for at least three months with a complete tear of his right pectoral muscle, suffered in the opening quarter of the Power's 33-point win over St Kilda in round one.

"It's a complete rupture to the pectoral muscle, which for Whitey will mean he misses at least 12 weeks,” Port high performance manager Darren Burgess said.

"It's really disappointing for him; unfortunately the symptoms present similar irrespective of the severity of the injury, so we couldn't confirm the detail until the scans.

"He'll spend six weeks in a sling and then we'll progress as required after that."

Saturday, 13 June 2015
Matt White could miss up to a month after suffering a hamstring injury against Geelong.

White was helped from the field in the second term and was subbed out of the contest.

"Significant I'd suggest given the way he came off. 'Whitey's' got some speed, so I would suggest he'd be missing for a chunk," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"I'm not sure exactly [how many weeks] but 3-4 weeks, a typical hamstring I would have thought."

Tuesday, 23 September 2014
Matt White takes out the 2014 Hungry Jack's Goal of the Year.

White took three bounces en route to his sensational running goal against Richmond, bolting from the half-back flank into the forward 50 and finishing his shot on the run.

The Power speedster beat young Western Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli, whose twisting snap from the boundary line against Melbourne was also highly commended, and Adelaide's Eddie Betts.

Thursday, 11 September 2014
Matt White will line up for Port Adelaide in Saturday's semi-final against Fremantle despite a cracked jaw after surviving vigorous testing at training.

"Matty's right now; we did some stuff with him [on Wednesday]. We're pretty comfortable that he's going to get through OK – something would have to go wrong for him not to play," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"There's always that slight danger that you could get another hit and cause some more damage, but there's always that danger in every game."

Wednesday, 10 September 2014
Port Adelaide expects Matt White to play in their semi final against Adelaide at Patersons Stadium despite a cracked jaw.

"We think he'll play," Power coach Ken Hinkley said.

"I'm not someone who tricks around with what we might and might not do. I expect Matty White, at this stage, to play. So he'll be named in the side tomorrow night."

Monday, 8 September 2014
Matt White has a small crack high in his jaw, but it won't require surgery and the club isn't ruling him out of next Saturday night's semi final against Fremantle.

"I just spoke to the doc before and he said he's got a small crack in his jaw," teammate Matthew Lobbe said.

"They'll look at it later in the week … we'd love him to play but if he doesn't we've got great depth as well.

"A few boys stood out in a losing Magpies side on the weekend."

Thursday, 10 July 2014
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says he is impressed with the impact former Tiger Matt White has had with the Power.

"He's had a terrific season and it's a real credit to him ... he was an important part of us obviously but he went to Port Adelaide through free agency, which is what it's there for," Hardwick said.

"He's a really good barometer for them. He's exciting to watch, he carries the ball really well and he's always been a really good kick of the ball."

Friday, 23 May 2014
Matt White is averaging a career-best 16.4 disposals this year, making him one of the most improved players for 2014.
Sunday, 13 April 2014
Matthew White says he feels at home at Port Adelaide after gathering 26 disposals and kicking 3 goals against the Lions as a Power player.

"As much as I loved Richmond and it'd be nice to still be there playing with the boys and helping out the team, I didn't see myself playing a lot of footy there," White said.

"So to come here and be given the opportunity, it's just paying a bit of respect back to the club.

"To kick 3.2 is definitely my best in an AFL game so far: to start on the field, kick a few, play well – it's a great feeling.

"I don't know if I'll do it again this year but thank you to the Port Adelaide people for embracing me into the club."

Friday, 4 October 2013
Port Adelaide secures former Richmond speedster Matt White on a three-year deal on the opening day of the Gillette AFL Trade and Free Agency Period.

"It's a massive opportunity to come to a great club in Port Adelaide, and I'm really looking forward to what the next few years can bring the club and me personally," White said.

"It's a massive thing for me to come over to SA and into a group that's played in two finals this year.

"I know Ken runs a pretty tight ship and I'm really excited about the challenge of trying to slot into the 22 each week and hopefully be playing finals come the end of next year."

Tuesday, 1 October 2013
Matt White informs Richmond that he wants to be traded from the club with Port Adelaide reportedly being his preferred destination.

"Richmond had indicated Matt was a required player but they understand the free agency situation and the opportunities for Matt to play a role at a club," White's manager Anthony McConville said.

Saturday, 27 April 2013
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick fumes after believing that his side was robbed of a late goal in the Tigers' one-point loss to Fremantle.

Matt White's 23rd-minute shot on goal in the last term appeared likely to either bounce through or hit the post.

Instead, it crashed into the legs of the goal umpire and back into play. Fremantle's Stephen Hill picked the ball up and walked it through for a rushed behind, reducing the home side's lead to one point.

"I know it went through for a goal," Hardwick said.

"It crossed the line. Have you see the replay? Maybe we should have called a review, you would have thought. No? Seriously, in a tight game? Joke.

"There is a system in place. Use it, or don't bother."

Tuesday, 30 October 2012
Luke McGuane, Tom Derickx and Matt White have signed new one-year deals to stay at Richmond.
Friday, 17 February 2012
Richmond midfielder Matt White hopes for a return to form in an injury-free season for 2012.

"I've got plenty more left in me. Whether it's in the midfield or forward or wherever, I'll be giving 100 per cent all year," he said.

"I'm fighting fit. I've got no issues. I'm flying again."
