Beau Maister announces his immediate retirement after 44 games in six seasons at the top level.

Maister's season was ended three weeks ago by a shoulder injury that required surgery and he told his teammates of his decision on Tuesday morning.

"It is with real disappointment that we say goodbye to Beau as he has become one of the most admired and respected players within our group," St Kilda head of football Chris Pelchen said.

"Since joining the Saints, he has performed to his absolute ability through sheer hard work and determination … qualities that have endeared him to everyone at the club.

"We thank Beau for his commitment to the Saints and wish him every success for the future."

After struggling with injuries in 2012, Beau Maister takes a philosophical view towards the season and looks forward to 2013.

"This year has been disappointing to miss so much footy. I like to think I can withstand a full season but the injuries haven't been the sort that could have been prevented," Maister said.

"They're a bit unlucky but that's the game that we're in and I suppose you've got to wear that and move on and come back bigger and better."

Beau Maister, Terry Milera have joined Farren Ray in re-signing with the Saints.

Beau Maister will miss up to eight weeks following surgery on a serious hamstring injury.

Maister damaged the lateral hamstring tendon behind his left knee while in pursuit of West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie in the dying stages of the Saints' clash with the Eagles at Etihad Stadium.

Beau Maister will miss up to six weeks after fracturing a bone in his right wrist.

After 10 games in 2012, Beau Maister is hoping to become a regular for St Kilda in 2013.

"Last year was a challenging year and I was happy to a degree to get 10 games, but I'm really striving to improve on that this year," Maister said.

"As much as it's never easy because it's very demanding what we do, being my second year this year I've become closer with certain guys and I feel a bit more comfortable around the club.

"I know the structures a lot more now than when I came straight in last year."

St Kilda has earmarked a forward line role for former Eagles defender Beau Wilkes in 2012.

"I'm really looking forward to the opportunity here at St Kilda. I'm really excited," Wilkes said.

"I'd like to think I can play a role at either end, so it's just a matter of wherever the club needs me to play. I hope I can fulfil a role."
