Scott Watters Biography

Saturday, 28 June 2014
Justin Koschitzke has lashed out at his ex-coach Scott Watters for starting him as the substitute in the forward's final game last year.

Koschitzke, who was also playing his 200th match, said he was offended after being forced to wear the green vest in the final-round clash against Fremantle.

"I'm running through the banner for my 200th, I don't need to be wearing 'the Kermit suit', do I?" Koschitzke told Off the Bench.

"I had sort of been warned, but I'm thinking 'surely not'.

"It's my last game. We're playing Freo. They're not bringing their good side over. I've been here for 13 years, surely I start?"

When asked if he had been offended by Watters' decision to start him as the sub, Koschitzke said "A little bit, yeah".

So much so that Koschitzke refused to wear the vest when he ran through the banner at the start of the match.

"I put a tracksuit top over it (the green vest) to warm up, went back down to the rooms, tried to take it off, and our match day manager came over and told me I had to wear it.

"So then we walk out into the race, my lovely wife was sitting there with my son Jack ... it was a pretty big day for the Saints.

"Before I grabbed Jack, I took it off and just threw it in the race and went through the banner," Koschitzke said.

Sacked St Kilda coach Scott Watters has no regrets over his ill-fated two-year tenure at the club, saying the youngsters he blooded as the Saints slipped to 16th last year will be the future of the club.

"Every decision made was to give the club a future. The players that will run around this year and the next were given the chance to learn their craft over the last couple of years," Watters said.

"I think it's really important as a coach that you aim to build a club that can ultimately compete on the big stage.

"You owe that to your supporters, and I always felt you had to stay really true to those values.

"There are kids who I am really proud of and I think they will be really good players."

Melbourne radio station SEN 1116 has issued an on-air apology on Friday to St Kilda's head of football Chris Pelchen following comments made by Dermott Brereton on November 1.

Brereton, a five-time premiership player with Hawthorn, made personal comments in regards to Pelchen following the sacking of close friend Scott Watters as senior coach.

On SEN's The Run Home host Mark Allen issued an apology to Pelchen and the St Kilda Football Club for the interview that took place with Brereton on the show.

"During the course of that interview, Dermott made a number of comments about Chris Pelchen, the Club's Head of Football, that we have no reason to believe were accurate or with genuine basis," Allen said.

"SEN seeks to be impartial whilst welcoming free speech and the ability for callers to express strong opinions. We do not set out to make personal attacks and we welcome individuals to exercise a right of reply.

"We strive for honest, fairness, independence and respect.

"On reflection of Dermott's comments about Chris Pelchen, we accept that in this instance, we have not lived up to those principles and SEN, David (Schwarz, Allen's co-host) and I wish to acknowledge that on our program today."

St Kilda unexpectedly sacks coach Scott Watters with Saints president Peter Summers refusing to provide specific reasons for his dismissal.

"We went through a review process. Out of that process there were a number of things identified that we needed to be very rigorous about, including our structures," Summers said.

Former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas slams the culture of the club following the shock sacking of coach Scott Watters.

"It's a cultural thing, and people hate that word, but I'm telling you I've had a long association with the St Kilda footy club that dates back to 1974," Thomas said.

"I think I understand the place as well as anyone and we make these decisions on a monotonously regular basis and we become the laughing stock."

St Kilda CEO Michael Nettlefold says the club will be looking to offer coach Scott Watters a contract extension before 2014.

"He'd be keen to get an extension to his contract, we've got a young group coming through and it's something the board will consider in due course," Nettlefold said.

"There's no issue there.

"It's something that we'll work on over the next couple of months. It really depends on work loads, these things need a fair bit of work."

St Kilda coach Scott Watters insists he isn't worrying about extending his contract beyond 2014 just yet.

"Whether that happens now or next year … the really pleasing thing at our footy club is our directors, our executive and our coaching group, we're all very much on the same page about what we need to do as a group," Watters said on Saturday on SEN.

"That will take care of itself. It doesn't really cause me great worry or angst.

"Ultimately that's the board's decision. I think any coach, you like to know that you're going to get the opportunity to take the group through a tough period, a period where you need to reshape the group."

Sunday, 16 October 2011
St Kilda has announced Collingwood assistant Scott Watters as its new senior coach.

"It is exciting. It's a group I've admired from an opposition, competitive point of view for the last two or three years, [with] their spirit," Watters said.

"Now to be a part of that, and have the opportunity to work with that type of group, it's fantastic and I can't wait to get into it."
