Sam Blease Biography

Monday, 3 November 2014
After being signed by Geelong as a delisted free agent, Sam Blease cites the instability at Melbourne as a major reason for the lack of development in its younger players.

"I've had five coaches in six years. You can only imagine if your boss changes every year almost, it's hard to keep consistency," Blease said.

"People forget how unstable the Melbourne Football Club has been at times and that's reflective of five or six coaches we've had.

"It's a shame it's that way, players have to take responsibility, but AFL footy's challenging at the best of times and when there's other obstacles in front of you, it makes it even more difficult.

"A lot of the players would be more mentally exhausted from their time (at Melbourne) than physically."

Blease admits the defensive side of his game, or lack thereof, was his downfall at the Demons.

"Most of the time Roosy's game plan was based more around defence and I guess I lean more on the side of offence … and defence is something that hasn't come natural to me," he said.

"It's certainly something I've been trying to work on over the journey of my AFL career.

"I just felt like anything I did I probably wasn't going to get an opportunity, I just wasn't in the plans at Melbourne."

Delisted Demon Sam Blease says he is working hard to get another chance and that he has been working with high performance running coach Adam Larcom in the past month.

"Obviously the time at Melbourne has been a little bit inconsistent, and I've taken this opportunity over this break to work on some things…endurance being one of those," Blease said.

"I think it's put me in good stead for another opportunity.

"This year has been a little bit different to previous years where I've sort of felt that this was my most consistent VFL season."

Recently delisted Melbourne speedster Sam Blease says he still has a burning desire to play in the AFL.

Blease says he has long understood he needed to improve his ability to run harder for longer.

"It's something I've been really working on each pre-season…I'm just a natural speed athlete," he said.

"It's probably never going to be something I'm going to be outstanding at, because my body's just not build that way.

"But if I can build up my tank so I can repeat speed efforts over and over again – which I've been able to do a little bit.

"I had an interrupted pre-season last year, that always holds you back a little bit, but going into this pre-season I'm fully fit and ready to go."

Wednesday, 17 September 2014
Sam Blease and Melbourne have agreed to part ways, with the 23-year-old seeking opportunities elsewhere after playing just two senior games in 2014.

Colin Garland, Sam Blease and Mitch Clark pledge support for embattled coach Mark Neeld after the Demons were thumped by Essendon to the tune of 148 points.

"As a group we've really got to stick together and find out who cares about the place," Garland said.

"We're 100 per cent behind Neeldy, we're just in a tough spot at the moment, hopefully we can get out of it," Blease said.

"We want to play for Neeldy, we love having Neeldy here, we're in this together. It's not just Neeldy - Neeldy's not out there on the ground," Clark said.

Sam Blease earns a Rising Star nomination for his performance against St Kilda after battling with injury, form, self-belief and a broken leg early in his career.

"I like to think I'm pretty confident in how I play and how I go about my footy. Coming back from a broken leg I was pretty low on confidence and there were times I didn't think I would actually make it back to play AFL," he said.

"That was before I even debuted. AFL footy is all about confidence and if you're up and about and you are confident you can generally do a lot with that. I've generally tried to do as much as I can without being cocky or arrogant but just quietly confident."

Sunday, 12 August 2012
Sam Blease lacks nothing in confidence and is now starting to build a reputation as a quality player on the rise after tallying 20 possessions and 5 goals againts St Kilda in just his 18th senior game.

"I haven't missed a game this year which has been good."

Sam Blease is a lively, unique talent who is working hard to become a two-way player, to get fit enough to both attack and, critically, defend when the occasion demands.

"Definitely the endurance side of the game is something I need to improve on, " Blease said.

"I have been a short distance athlete all my life. I have got an OK fitness base at the moment [but I've] just still got so much work to do. That is why I am really looking forward to this pre-season and really having a crack and getting as fit as I can."

Wednesday, 22 February 2012
Demons coach Mark Neeld has sent a zero tolerance message to Melbourne players, suspending and fining defender Sam Blease for missing a meeting.

"We are building a high-performance environment at Melbourne. We value greatly the need for preparation," Neeld said.

"By missing this meeting Sam has compromised his preparation for this weekend's game, and therefore won't be available for selection this week."

Nab AFL Rising star nominee for round 23, Sam Blease, feared a broken leg would end his AFL dream.

"I felt like I was mentally a little bit unstable if you like. I was a bit unsure if I'd get back to playing footy again and I suppose there was a bit of time when I didn't think I'd get to play at AFL level," Blease said.

"A lady outside of the club helped me find a few areas to focus on and I gained a lot of confidence from speaking to someone outside of footy."
