Robert Muir Biography

Tuesday, 25 August 2020
Robert Muir says he appreciates the positive reactions to his revelations about being a victim of racism during his time at St Kilda.

"In the last two days, I have been overwhelmed by the reaction to my story, and want to thank everyone who has sent me kind wishes. I appreciate it greatly, because for most of my life people have not understood the difficulties I've faced because of racism and trauma," Muir said in a statement.

"Although I have suffered greatly because of my involvement in the game, my love for football and for St Kilda remains. I missed out on the support I needed when I played, but I am glad it is being offered now. I'm also pleased that the many brilliant Indigenous footballers currently playing the game are finally getting the support they require."

St Kilda apologises to former player Robert Muir after an article, which documented several accounts of vile racism on and off the field, appeared on ABC news.

In Russell Jackson's article, Muir explained how incessant racism drove him to alcoholism and into deep depression. In one disturbing account, Muir explained when he was just 20yo, and new to the club, a teammate urinated on him in a shower while others laughed.

"Reading about the impact of racism on Robert Muir's life in today's ABC article will no doubt be confronting for everyone involved in football, as it was for me personally," St Kilda CEO Matt Finnis said in a statement.

"We admire Robert's courage to speak out about the racism he has endured and lack of support provided by our club when he needed it most. We apologise unreservedly to Robert and his family and are humbled that he continues to love our club."
