Cian Hanley Biography

Cian Hanley returns to Ireland for personal reasons, parting with the club after three seasons.

Hanley has experienced personal challenges over the past 12 months and is returning to his homeland to be closer to his family.

"The club has been unbelievable, I’m very appreciative of what they’ve done over the last while. It’s no fault of theirs I’m going home," Hanley said.

"It’s just more me and personal reasons and I just think it’s the right time to go."

Tommy, the younger brother of Pearce Hanley and Cian Hanley, passes away in a Dublin hospital after suffering cancer.

Pearce (Gold Coast) and Cian (Brisbane Lions) travelled back to Ireland to be with Tommy and made it home in time to see their brother before his death.

The Suns and Lions have both released statements to express their condolences to the Hanley family.

Pearce Hanley and his brother, Cian Hanley, will return to Ireland to deal with a private family matter.

The Suns and Lions released a joint statement on Sunday evening confirming the brothers will return to their homeland.

Pearce spent time in Ireland over the Christmas break to be his family, including younger brother Tommy, who is suffering stage four cancer.

"Both clubs will provide all the support the family needs during this challenging time," the statement said.

Brisbane select Cian Hanley with pick No.56 in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"Cian is a focused, diligent young man who has impressed us all with his professional attitude and drive to improve," Brisbane recruiting manager Stephen Conole said.

"As captain of his Mayo (County) team, Cian has similarly impressed with his leadership and strong work ethic.

"His form for Mayo this season had been outstanding and no doubt he is now regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Ireland."
