Collingwood rookie Tom Hunter has retired at 20 due to the impact of two serious neck injurie, the latest of which was suffered during a NAB cup match against the Eagles.

"Obviously it was shattering - that's the best way to describe it," Hunter told The Footy Show.

"You work so hard for pretty much your whole life and then to be told that something you can't control is ending your football career - you don't wish it on anybody."

Collingwood pair Nick Maxwell and Tom Hunter spent the night in a Perth hospital after suffering heavy knocks in the NAB Cup semi final win over West Coast.

"Maxwell has some internal bleeding from his kidneys and will remain in hospital for observation. His condition will be monitored in coming days but at this stage his recovery time and return to Melbourne are not confirmed," the club said in a media statement.

"Hunter suffered trauma to his neck region and will also remain in hospital in Perth under observation."
