Corey Wagner Biography

Sunday, 6 August 2023
Corey Wagner remembers feeling rattled when he was unexpectedly called up for his club debut when the Dockers met Gold Coast at Norwood Oval in round five.

After three months in the WAFL, however, Wagner has returned a different player in the past three weeks, re-emerging as a confident and efficient rebounding defender who is using his attacking strengths.

"The more footy you play through the year, the more confident you get with your kicking and I've just kept going for my kicks after those mistakes. JL (coach Justin Longmuir) has brought that mentality back to move on and enjoy and trust what you've been doing. It's been good," he said.

"I've really enjoyed the last three weeks and it's just felt like another game instead of worrying and being nervous too much, which I thought I did at the start of the year to keep my spot."

Tuesday, 20 November 2018
Corey Wagner will become a Demon under the new rule allowing clubs to recruit former listed players outside of the draft system.

Wagner played eight senior games in two seasons with North before he was delisted at the end of 2017.

"By committing to Corey now, we can guarantee him a place on our rookie list, rather than waiting for the draft and risking another team taking him," Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"Corey had a fantastic season playing for the Casey Demons under Jade Rawlings. We feel that his AFL experience with North Melbourne, his physical attributes and his flexibility in his role will make him a welcome addition to our list."

Tuesday, 10 October 2017
North Melbourne delist Corey Wagner.

Wagner, 20, played only eight matches in two seasons and battled injury in that time, including an ankle setback in round seven against Adelaide that sidelined him for eight weeks.

Wednesday, 13 September 2017
Scott Thompson, Jarrad Waite and Ben Jacobs are among seven North Melbourne players whose futures are unlikely to be decided until after this year's trade period.

Thompson (restricted free agent), Waite and Jacobs are set to come out of contract at the end of October, along with Sam Gibson, Aaron Mullett and second-year players Declan Mountford and Corey Wagner.

It's understood North has told some of these players it won't be able to inform them whether they will be offered contract extensions until after the trade period finishes on Thursday, October 19.

Tuesday, 9 May 2017
Corey Wagner will miss up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery for a high ankle sprain.

The 20-year-old was playing his first game of the year in North Melbourne's 59-point upset of top side Adelaide in Hobart.

Wagner managed barely three minutes of playing time – winning two disposals – before sustaining the injury in a tackle on Crow Daniel Talia.

"He fell awkwardly after the tackle and the weight of his body came down onto his ankle, resulting in a significant sprain," Kangaroos doctor Peter Bacquie said.

Friday, 17 June 2016
Corey Wagner makes his AFL debut for North Melbourne at Docklands Stadium with 7 disposals (3 kicks and 4 handballs), a mark and a tackle in a 9-point loss to Hawthorn.
Tuesday, 24 November 2015
North Melbourne select Corey Wagner with pick No.43 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

"He represented Queensland through all the state programs," North Melbourne recruiting manager Bryce Lewis said.

"He's a versatile ball-winner who's creative, is also a strong runner and shows a bit of toe exiting the contests.

"He's a mid/forward but can also play some roles potentially down back."
