Gold Coast fire Stuart Dew as head coach of the Suns despite 18 months left on his contract.

"I want to make it absolutely crystal clear that we are unashamedly holding this club to account at a very high level... it was crystal clear to us that this was a necessary decision," Suns chairman Bob East said.

"There is a clear gap between where we currently sit and where our expectations lie, and the senior coach selection process will be solely designed to close that gap."

Stuart Dew will remain as coach of Gold Coast until at least the end of 2024 after signing a new deal with the Suns.

"You spend every day, every minute here trying to get the club, the players, the staff to maximise their potential and I'm honoured to be trusted with that for another two years," Dew said.

"I put every inch of my energy into the club and people and I feel like personally I've been rewarded, but collectively we've been rewarded by everyone's efforts this year."

Stuart Dew reveals how his close relationship with Rhyce Shaw helped facilitate a move for the former North Melbourne coach to Gold Coast during the pre-season.

"When 'Shawry' finished with North, I'd been in contact with him a lot, purely from a support and friendship point of view. It was important from my point of view that number one he was OK and tracking well, and over time that was certainly the case," Dew explained.

"Late December was around when I could sense he had the itch for coaching and that was never going to go. A lot of his talk is around young players, development and how they come into the system and get to where they want to go."

Two-year-old footage of coach Stuart Dew urinating in public emerges after being reportedly leaked by "disgruntled sources" close to Gold Coast staff who were recently made redundant. The footage was allegedly filmed by the club's football manager Jon Haines outside the Miami Tavern Shark Bar.

"We apologise for our actions for which there is no excuse and we take full responsibility for our behaviour," Dew said in a statement.

As a result of the leak, both Dew and Haines will donate $5000 each to the programs that AFL Cape York House supports (these include employment and training opportunities for young Indigenous men from some of Far North Queensland's most remote communities).

The Suns shed 14 staff from their football department in the past week, headlined by senior assistant coach Dean Solomon.

Football greats, past players, and commentators have leapt to Solomon's defence, claiming a rift between Solomon and coach Stuart Dew, a contention denied by Gold Coast football manager Jon Haines.

"It's complete nonsense, there's no rift. The relationship between all the coaches has been outstanding. They're a terrific bunch of people and they work well together. It's misinformed and it's incorrect," Haines said.

Stuart Dew signs a new deal with Gold Coast to remain as coach of the club until the end of 2022.

"I'm humbled and really privileged to coach this club," Dew said.

"All good footy clubs have stability. We've worked really hard the last three years to have that stability on-field, and the last piece of that puzzle was some off-field stuff as well."

A contract extension for Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew that was imminent ahead of the start of the season has been put on hold following the suspension of the 2020 AFL Season due to the coronavirus outbreak.

However, Suns chief executive Mark Evans said the club would swiftly resume discussions once through the COVID-19 fallout that has gripped the AFL season.

"It's not the time to talk about it right now, we're all doing far more important things like stabilising the industry and working out the new work flows and connecting with players and staff," Evans said.

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew says the club won't rush its current rebuild and has warned that progress may not be apparent quickly.

The Suns finished 17th last year – Dew's first in charge – and now on the back of 15 straight losses, appear headed for the wooden spoon in 2019.

"We made some decisions at the end of last year we knew might have caused a bit of pain this year in terms of win-loss, but we think it will hold us in good stead," Dew said.

"The opportunity some players have got on the back of those decisions, we've seen some growth we're aware of, externally they may not see the results of that for another 12 months."

Adelaide coach Don Pyke has made it clear he and his coaches were laughing at the antics of their own players, and not Gold Coast's performance, during their 95-point massacre of the Suns at Metricon Stadium.

In his post-game media conference, Suns coach Stuart Dew took exception to the Crows' coaches laughing as they cruised to victory.

"Look at the Crows' coaches' box in the last quarter," Dew said on Saturday night.

"They laughed in the last quarter. We've got to live with that. That stings, it's got to sting ... that's what they think of us."

Pyke later clarified what the coaches were laughing at.

"We were reacting to one of our own players, Tex (co-captain Taylor Walker), calling for a handball in the goalsquare," Pyke said.

"I could probably see where (Dew) was coming from, but the reality was, it was a moment in the box. It wasn't any way, shape or form directed at Gold Coast and their performance."

Sean Lemmens signs a three-year deal with Gold Coast to remain at the club until the end of 2021.

"Having Stuey come on board this year, it's been awesome," Lemmens said of Suns coach Stuart Dew.

"The family culture he brings and the awareness around family and how much he cares about you, is definitely a standout and that’s the biggest reason why I stayed."

Stuart Dew says a big part of his philosophy as coach of the Suns is developing a strong relationship with the players.

"As an assistant coach I always tried to not forget what it was like as a player and to put yourself in the players' shoes," Dew said.

"I think improvement is not just about looking at edits. You only get to the technical part if you've got a relationship.

"As a coaching group we have to know what motivates you, where you're at in life, what's happening outside footy, everyone ticks differently."

Sydney coach John Longmire is backing former assistant Stuart Dew's wide skillset to make him a success in Gold Coast's lead role.

"He had a really excited tone to his voice, as you'd imagine, and I couldn't be happier for him," Longmire said.

"I'm just really pleased he gets his shot at a senior coaching job, and I think the Gold Coast is a good fit for him."

Stuart Dew is appointed as Gold Coast's third senior coach after a two-month search process by the club.

The Suns unveiled Dew as their new coach on a minimum three-year deal after he was ratified by the club's board.

The Suns have narrowed their search for a head coach down to leading assistants John Barker, Stuart Dew and Scott Burns.

Being patient and waiting for the right senior coaching role has been a key lesson out of the AFL's Level Four course, according to inaugural graduate Stuart Dew.

Dew has been one of the game's most highly rated assistants for a number of years at Sydney, and he has shown patience in the senior positions he has applied for.

"Previously guys would jump into the next role available, but with this program and with things that have happened in the past guys are really making sure it's the right fit for them," Dew said.

"Coaches would literally try and fit in with the job, but it's got to be two ways for it to work I think that's industry-wide, not just personally.

"I think you see a lot more guys choose if that club is the right fit and certainly a lot of the mentors have been big on that – it's got to be a two-way fit."

Stuart Dew's manager Justin Reid confirms that his client is happy to remain in Sydney and will not apply for the Suns or Dogs vacant senior coaching positions.

Sydney assistant coach Stuart Dew is linked to the vacant senior coaching role at Adelaide following the sacking of Brenton Sanderson.

Stuart Dew says he was very close to joining Melbourne in a role where he would be groomed as Paul Roos' successor before opting to remain at the Swans for three years.

"It was a good opportunity from 'Roosy' but just the timing wasn't quite there," Dew said.

"It's obviously something that really dominates your life and really needs everything, so I thought another one or two more years and then I'd be ready to embrace that opportunity.

"Eight months have already passed, so it comes around pretty quick.

"It's one of those things that I'd love to get the opportunity (to do) but I'm enjoying my time doing what I'm doing.

"Not many people get that opportunity and may never again.

"You can't get obsessed by it."

Sydney sign a three-year deal with Stuart Dew as strategy and midfield coach for the Swans.

"We understand that there were other clubs interested in Stu, but to have him re-commit to the club is a strong show of faith in the Swans football program," Sydney coach John Longmire said.

"We're glad 'Stuey' has confidence that the Swans will continue to assist his development as a coach."

The Sydney Swans have promoted development coach Stuart Dew to the role of assistant.

"He only retired from playing last year, so he has a thorough understanding of the way the game is currently played," new Sydney Swans coach John Longmire said.

"His work with the younger players on our list has been really impressive and a number of them have been elevated from the reserves to play senior football this season."

Former Port Adelaide and Hawthorn premiership player Stuart Dew has joined the Swans as an assistant coach.

"We are extremely pleased to add a person of Stuart's character and extraordinary playing background to our coaching team," coach Paul Roos said.

"Coming from two excellent clubs in Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, and having won premierships with both, he will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that he will be able to pass onto our players."

Stuart Dew announces his second retirement from football and will hang up the boots at the end of the 2009 season.

"I went into the mid-season break not happy with my contribution in the first half of the year and decided that if I couldn't contribute in the second half of the year then that would be it," said Dew.

"I got injured before the next game so I never really had a chance. I think I'm at the state and the club is at the stage you can't carry someone that's not able to withstand the rigours of the game."

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson says the recruiting of Stuart Dew was worthwhile, despite the brevity of his stay at the club.

"I can remember catching up with him a couple of years ago and trying to orchestrate this whole involvement he would have with our footy club and he had a passion to get back to playing AFL footy again," Clarkson said.

"We're indebted to him in a sense. He brought so much leadership both on the field and off the field for our group last year and played a pivotal role for us to be able to secure that flag."

Hawthorn players return to Melbourne from their trip to Papua New Guinea where they trekked throught the gruelling Kokoda trail.

The group of players include Simon Taylor as well as new recruits Brendan Whitecross, Cyril Rioli and Stuart Dew.

"It was emotionally and physically the hardest thing I've ever done," Taylor said.

"You were wet by nine o'clock in the morning with sweat, and you would stay that way for the rest of the day. And then you'd bathe in a creek to try and get the sweat off your clothes, which you put back on the next day."

Hawthorn takes a hardline stance on new recruit Stuart Dew's weight who they picked up with pick 45 of the 2007 national draft.

"In his last year at Port Adelaide he played the whole season above 100kg and we won't accept that," Hawthorn list manager Chris Pelchen said.

"He needs to dramatically improve his fitness base and until that time comes, he won't play in the seniors."

Dew, who has already shed significant weight, is determined to make the most of his opportunity with the Hawks.

"I'm working really hard," Dew said. "I have been riding and hill walking to lose weight and am pretty pleased with the way things are going."

Dew's former coach at Port Adelaide, Mark Williams, had confidence that Dew would still be a very good player.

"He's one of the most talented goalkickers anyone has ever known. I am sure he's going to do well," Williams said.

"He is a natural footballer. He loves the game with a great deal of passion and he's very smart, so I think Hawthorn has got a great pick on its hands."

Dew nominates for the 2007 AFL national draft. It is understood Dew plans to join the Hawks who are coached by his friend Alastair Clarkson.
