Mick Malthouse on selecting new players:
"We wouldn't pick them if we didn't have any confidence in them. They're not restricted by age. If they're ready to play, then we'll play them. I don't believe in holding players back if they're ready to go, it doesn't matter if they're 19 or 29, they'll play."
Nathan Brown on his first game:
"I just wanted to get out there and give 100 per cent for the black and white. I've always been pretty passionate about Collingwood. Mick has told me it's all about focus, my opponent might be quicker than me, he might be stronger than me, but it's about positioning and being focused."
Mick Malthouse on young defender Nathan Brown playing on Pavlich:
"I still think Pavlich took 10 or 12 marks, didn't he, but Browny held up and that's what we want him to do, to get as much experience as he can."
Mick Malthouse on being in control of the game:
"We were able to steady at the right time, block off at the right time and, generally speaking, do the right thing and understand that it is round one when a lot of mistakes are going to be made."
Mick Malthouse on the three-quarter time lead:
"Technically, I would suggest that we were probably a lot better than one goal in front at three-quarter time. The scoreboard doesn't say that, but that's how I felt and I thought our players thought that as well."
Mick Malthouse on his young Magpies side:
"They are 63 years, collectively, more experienced than us or older than us. For our young players to hold up and actually go away towards the end is fantastic because we're drawing on youth, we're drawing on that enthusiasm."
Mick Malthouse on Anthony Rocca's game:
"The first game is always difficult for big players because they haven't got the same touch generally, He mucked up one or two, so perhaps he could have kicked more, but he was handy put it that way; very handy."
Mark Harvey on whether it was a mistake to select mostly senior players for the match:
"I don't think any of the senior players really let us down. We probably just got overrun a little bit at the end of the game and I don't think that's anything to do with selection or anything like that. They rotated pretty heavily and they got us with some run, but I think that our turnovers cost us again in terms of actually chasing a lot more again."
Mark Harvey on the Dockers' lack of efficiency up forward:
"We had a lot of inside 50s in the first quarter that we didn't capitalise on and some of the forwards have to find form."
Mark Harvey on Fremantle's midfield:
"We had 20 more possessions than them, so it's the quality and the decision-making more that matters most, particularly when the game's in the balance."
Mark Harvey on a poor game by Chris Tarrant:
"He will be judged in coming weeks. He just couldn't get into it today. You like your forwards to be in it constantly. In the end I had to put Luke McPharlin up there and he kicked three goals."
