Sydney Swans Post-Match Quotes
Barry Hall
Barry Hall on the Swans potential to be one of the AFL's best teams:
"We've got no doubts we can definitely be one of the best teams going around at the moment. The way we played today, regardless of who we play, we are always going to give ourselves a really good chance. Regardless of whether we score 22 goals or 12 goals, if we've got that sort of pressure, more often than not we'll get a result."
Paul Roos on why Nick Davis was dropped from the team:
"His fitness is good, it's just getting his mind around it and running and putting pressure on. We don't mind how many goals he kicks, it's just really how much pressure he can put on. We've got to have forwards who chase and tackle and it's something Davo can do. I'm sure he'll be back in the team soon."
Barry Hall
Barry Hall on the importance of putting the pressure on:
"We were on our game today. Our skills were really good and the only goals they kicked at the start were from our turnovers. It just goes to show that the pressure you put on opposition teams to win the ball back and your skills, pretty much determines most results now."
Barry Hall
Barry Hall on rebounding from a loss against St Kilda in Round 1:
"I suppose a week is a long time in footy. We were very disappointed last week and it was pleasing to respond the way we did. Our ball use and all that stuff was 10 times better."
Barry Hall
Barry Hall on sharing the workload as a team:
"It wasn't just one bloke kicking the goals. Everyone was on the job and pretty focused, and if we can share the workload every week it's going to be a lot harder to defend against us."
Barry Hall
Barry Hall on being written off during the pre-season:
"When you look at pre-season talk, we're up against it every year. Nothing changes from our point of view. We've got some quality players and if they play well it's a bonus, but it's all about the young guys coming through and sharing the workload as well."
Paul Roos on the Swans' ball use:
"We kept up that intensity and we were able to use the ball a lot better today which was probably the difference between last week and this week."
Paul Roos on getting contributions from both the younger and senior players:
"We've got a lot of faith in those (older) guys but it's probably the younger guys that have made it a bit more impressive today because you've got five young kids in and playing against a team that played in the grand final. I thought the mix was terrific."
Leo Barry
Leo Barry on Sydney's ball movement:
"The way we moved the ball was really slick today, we tended to make the right decisions. We were certainly on our game. And even though Port were putting numbers back, we were able to cut them up with our precise skills."
Port Adelaide Power Post-Match Quotes
Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Burgoyne on former Power player, Josh Francou, labeling the Power players as 'sooks':
"Obviously former players say things because they want to get a reaction out of their past club's players. They know what the inside working is like. You take a fair bit out of it and you don't take a fair bit out of it because they're trying to get a reaction from everyone."
Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Burgoyne on Sydney's game style:
"Sydney came with their game style, their pressure, hard tackling, never give in attitude and it put us under a lot of pressure and we couldn't deal with it in the end. If you play Sydney you know they're going to play contested footy and they showed us up in that area."
Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Burgoyne on starting the 2008 season with two losses:
"In past years, when I've been there, we've started with two losses and still had fairly successful seasons. We're not going to get too far ahead of ourselves or get too negative."
Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Burgoyne on a poor second half:
"Obviously our first half was pretty positive and our second half wasn't, but you get the supporters to keep that faith because we're not far from turning it around. If we could've taken a few of our opportunities going into half time on the weekend- the score would've been a lot closer."
Shaun Burgoyne
Shaun Burgoyne on Port Adelaide having to improve their contested footy:
"Contested footy is something we're continually working and you can never be too good at. We'll continue to work on it at training and hopefully we'll see the benefits of it during the game this week. If we don't, we'll continue to practice it and continue to train hard until we do see the benefits."
Mark Williams on the Power's need to win contested ball:
"It is a concern. There were a lot of 50-50, bumbling around, everyone after it (the ball), and I thought we kept going at it a lot of times but in the end they kept at it more and I think their persistence was probably the key to it."
Mark Williams on Sydney's run from defence:
"The ability of the opposition to take the ball from the backline to the forward line without us touching the ball was concerning to us. Obviously the midfielders have to play better, but we don't think any particular players played particularly well."
Mark Williams on Sydney kicking 22 goals against Port Adelaide:
"I watched them last week and they kicked six goals for the game. To kick 22 and beat us by double our score was certainly something we didn't see."
Mark Williams on being blown away in the third quarter:
"I thought probably for three quarters we were competitive. The third quarter, we were just terrible. It looked like boys versus men out there."
Mark Williams on the development of the players:
"Our players that played particularly well and really moved forward last year, we haven't seen that from them this year. We need to get a more even spread from 15 or so players. We'll consider who played well in the SANFL and no one's got a gold pass forever. It's important when you have young players that you do show some confidence in them."
