Leigh Matthews on the value of the win in the context of the season:
"It makes a big difference whether you win by two points or lose by two points. To be 0-2 after two games, you have a fair bit of ground to make up, but to be 1-1 you have that bit of equilibrium going forward. It was very valuable for us to find a way to get home."
Leigh Matthews on Josh Drummond's injury in the second quarter:
"Unfortunately he hurt his quad. It's his right leg and not his kicking quad, but it's always a lot of weeks with that injury."
Leigh Matthews on preparing for the match with a six-day break after playing in Perth:
"The Perth trip and the six day back-up is always a difficult assignment and you're never quite sure what to expect. We trained all right on Wednesday but if you looked at the third quarter tonight, you would have wondered if there was a little bit of residual fatigue setting in. But they found something in the last quarter."
Leigh Matthews on having an eight-day break before facing Sydney:
"The week's preparation was a tough ask but to next week we've got eight days, while the Swans have six. So we'll certainly have the better of it going in."
Dane Swan on why the Magpies lost the game:
"They got a couple of goals and we couldn't get it back and we probably went into our shells in the last 10 or 15 minutes and weren't as attacking as we were halfway through the third quarter when we got in front."
Mick Malthouse on young defender Nathan Brown's game on Jonathan Brown:
"It's always difficult to play on a champion. I think one of the lessons there is that he played on him. He'll have another story to tell and another chance to improve his game. I thought he battled hard against a champion."
Mick Malthouse on Bribane's defence:
"I thought they handled us well. I think their backline is very good. I think their backline is very underrated in many respects. You can name a couple, but after that all the other blokes play tall-medium so I think they had us pretty well covered."
Mick Malthouse on the Magpies missing set shots on goal:
"I'm not going to be harsh on those players, the conditions weren't great. We had the ball in there a lot of times and probably should have been better equipped to score."
Mick Malthouse on losing a close game:
"If you lose by three points or whatever it is you're going to be disappointed no matter who you play, but it's no different to any other time. It's up to the side to rebound. Those things happen and you just move on. Brisbane deserved their win, they played better football when they needed to and won the game."
Mick Malthouse on not likely being pleased with aspects of the umpiring:
"I'd say in 12 months I haven't spoken to (umpires boss) Jeff Gieschen, but I think I might this week. I'd appreciate it if you don't ask questions that are going to get the coach fined. What I've said is enough. I'm going to be talking to Jeff Gieschen this week."
