Umpires were a disgrace!!! your thoughts??
The umpires tonight ess vs stk were an absolute disgrace, from the word go you could tell the game was being over umpired.
The freekicks given to st.kilda out of the centre were shocking alot of them leading to goals but the very last decision takes the cake with the free kick tally at 35 - 23 in st.kildas favor with 1 minute to go they pay holding the ball against Angus Monfries in st kildas goal square.
David armitage kicked the winning goal from that free kick costing us the game.I've never seen a game so badly umpired in my life,i know its the old excuse blaming the umpires on the loss but in this case i think we have the right to.the bombers fought and played very hard through the whole game and we deserved it more then st kilda.whats everyones thoughts on the game and umpiring???

I am actually just using my fiance's pro cause I cant be bothered getting on mine atm and the comp going slow, but I so agree with your debacle, It was exactly the same in the preseason gf they got free kicks in very costly spots of the ground and we got needless frees in pointless positions where itd be more in their favor cause they flood, like the 9 pointer from Schneider in the 3rd term when supposedly Thomson went over the mark and he did after Schneider turned on to his left and played on then Fiora did the same as Thomson only worse when Burton marked 58mts out he actually ran up to Burton when he was lining up then realised what am I doing and ran back to the mark, Burton started walking and everyone in the crowd screamed as if to say yeah straight back at you and the Umpire called play on, when it was a blatent 50, that was in the 4th and very similar was the fact that Goodwin kicked the ball inside 50 got dumped the umpire called downfield, so we kicked the obvious 9 pointer which goal umpire gave, and the field umpire reversed it to a 6, the commentators were confused, and said they looked it up and said the field umpire was right, but I checked it out after the game and not only the field umpire but also the commentators were full of it, it was a lagitimate 9 pointer. Then 6 minutes later they paid a 2 blatent rushed behinds, one from Hudghton and another from Harvey as they walked them over deliberatly, they were payed 1pt each, we lost by 6pts if you add it up we shouldve won by 1pt. The free kick tally supposedly was 34-21 to St Kilda but if you go over the tape we only had 11 free kicks tthe entire game how radiculous is that??? Sorry for imposing on the Essendon chat room

The free kick tally at the end of the game was 38 - 24 give or take.so that means at the time of the last decsion the tally was 37 - 24 now what umpire in the right mind would pay holding the ball to St.kilda in there goal square with 1 mintue to go.The frees all up were 62 in a short game like that thats a disgrace thats why i think it was over umpired from the word go.Imagine in a full length game the free kick count would have been in excess of 70 now thats what you call over umpiring. How can we put up with that all year long???

I was at the game and yes I too agree the umpiring was hopeless but why do people always talk about the free kick count. That means nothing! Are you saying that if St Kilda were really rough and with no discipline that we should still have the same amount of free kicks? We need to stop keeping score of free kicks and award every free kick for its merits.

The freekicks kicks tally is the only way you can observe an umpires performance through stats. The umpires have the responsibility to keep a games free kicks consistent through out the whole game, but failed to do that.I was just making a point of this using the tally as a example thats all!!
St.kilda were playing just as hard as what we were except we werent getting rewarded for it and St.kilda were.If you were at the game you should have realised this!! but thanx for your input.

i know! who takes 15 seconds to bounce the ball when the clock is running? Oh well. it's probably for the best considering for the past couple of years the winner of the NAB cup does really bad in the premier league. Saints will be on the bottom this year. better them than us..
Daniel from Langwarrin (Bombers supporter), 9 Mar 2008 5:30hide comment
yeah umpiring and tribunal ruining the game local footy is way better and there are actually fights instead of ''melee's''
Ania from Melbourne (Bombers supporter), 6 Mar 2008 7:20hide comment
Yeah, it did get a bit much through the game - I had almost no voice the next morning from screaming my displeasure!! I know that the NAB cup doesn't mean anything as far as results for the upcoming season go but as an example of what the umpires' decision-making will be like this year it was a frightening display. The AFL like to make their umpires untouchable by the public and the media, but this can't be allowed to continue. If the umpires don't know the rules and can't keep the decisions consistant and reliable then they shouldn't be allowed to do the job!!!!!!!!!
James (Bombers supporter), 5 Mar 2008 7:11hide comment
You get that when little Ray Chamberlain is umpiring unfortunately.

Tell me that the AFL wouldn't wont St Kilda in the final V an interstate club. I think the whole system is rigged. In the last few years umpiring standards and tribunal suspensions have gone so far down hill its not funny. The game is half as enjoyable to watcha s it was through the 90's, yet more people apparently love it, go figure. I cant believe that something like the umpiring the other night goes un-reported in the media either, its so obvious that anyone who bad mouths umpiring in the media also puts their own career and repution in jeopardy and have a chance of getting black balled by the establishment. Demetrio can suck my c$%k as well as the rest of the AFL alo9ng with those little green bastards that are surposed to help the flow of a game and protect the player, not impede it at every chance they get and turn the sport into a forwards only game. Ill bet this year you'e be able to count free's to backmen on ya hands and feet. F$%k the AFL.

Absolutely spot on, couldn't have worded it any better!!!! Everything you have said is exactly how I feel. The AFL is scared of soccer and the fact that 5 and 6 year old boys r being told what to do by their overprotective mothers so they r trying to create a game with no injuries so that mums will want their sons to play afl... therefore no contests!! thank **** for local footy!!!
Josh from Carrum Downs (Bombers supporter), 3 Mar 2008 20:15hide comment
It was just another practice match, don't get too upset over it... The AFL has just glorified it that much that people take these games seriously. The preseason competition was designed so that team's didn't have to go out and get their own practice matches, the AFL would do it for them. Yes, I think we could and should have won, and yes, it was good that we were winning some preseason games getting abit of form and seeing the young players step up etc, but as I have said all along, they are just practice matches... BRING ON ROUND ONE...

You're bloody right! I was watching the came and there were so many free kicks paid to St. Kilda that just weren't there... I Do think the free against Monfries was the right decision - he obviosly wasn't trying to get rid of the ball - thogh Saints players had done the same thing throughout the night and consistently got away with it..

The Paddy Ryder infringement was an absolute joke though. Even when the Ump was penalising him he admittied he didn't give enough time to get to the right position.. And there was another one - One of our playerss kicket the ball along the ground near the boundary and after about 40 metres it went over the line and they payed a Deliberate out-of-bounds against him.. The Deliberate out of bounds rule can only be applied for distances under 20 meteres! But there were so many others.

Anyway the boys played good enough to win, which is a good sign - all we needed was Lucas to have kicked straight and the umpiring decisions would have been a moot point.

Cherie from Brisbane (Bombers supporter), 1 Mar 2008 20:25hide comment
I have never once blamed umpires for a loss - as a spectator or a player of my own chosen sport - as I believe that players should adapt to the umpiring - but after watching that game (replayed on channel 7 at MIDNIGHT in Queensland!!!) I can fairly say that our boys got robbed... all night they couldn't do a thing right - and the thing that gets me - I don't mind bad umpiring - AS LONG AS IT IS CONSISTIANTLY BAD SO PLAYERS CAN ADAPT. Our boys did one thing - got done and then STK did the same and got off scott free - and that final decision against Monfries was the prime example - all night they were paying the high in the center square against our boys - and then the same thing happens to monfries in the dying minutes and in the STK goal square and he is done for Holding the ball - those umpires should have a talking to and should be ashamed - It was an absolute discrase!
