You have to remember that Bird came to the club as a forward. He was elevated off the rookie list and thrown back in 2002 when Brittain suddenly realised our entire 1990s backline had retired. He's not our best defender, but he is our most versatile. I'd expect him to play like Waite last year - back when he's needed, forward when he can.
